Sophisticated and wild, off-sweet, with black licorice and plum up front; predominantly slate-mineral feel in the mouth and finishes brilliantly -- smooth cracked pepper draw with notes of hard candy; cries out for a chocolaty Cuban cigar; absolutely lovely though perhaps too understated for many buying a $30 port. Drinking well in 2010 and probably well beyond.

Deep ruby colour. This unfiltered and bottle aged LBV is packed with vibrant aromas of rich plumy fruit and spices, together with notes of dark bitter chocolate. On the palate delicious perfumed jammy blackcurrant fruit flavours that develop into subtle floral notes such as violets. Full bodied, with seductive ripe tannins and great balance, leading to a long and lingering finish. - Winery

The colour is an intense and deep ruby red.The nose is brimming with ripe red fruits, and there are also soft and deliciousaromas of black plums and hints ofcherries. On the palate the wine is fullbodied, with an exquisite and balancedstructure full of finesse. The SmithWoodhouse LBV 1995 is already showingexcellent bottle age characteristics and isnow drinking very well, but will continueto improve over the coming years.

The Smith Woodhouse Late Bottled Vintage is unlike the vast majority of all LBV's produced by most other producers. The Smith Woodhouse LBV is bottled without any fining or filtration whatsoever. This wine is then aged in bottle for a minimum of three years (often considerably longer) in the Smith Woodhouse cellars before being offered for sale. This period of aging in the cellar is virtually unique to Smith Woodhouse and transforms the wine into one of the greatest Ports on the market, completely different from most other 'commercial ' LBV's. It is the bottle-maturation which allows the wine to develop outstanding style and complexity, resulting in a deep garnet Port with rich mouth-filling flavours of ripe fruit, balanced by notes of black chocolate and peppery tannins.
