Smith Woodhouse Port Blend Porto 2003

Winemaker's Notes:

Classic Vintage Ports are only declared in exceptional years when conditions have been perfect and wines of outstanding quality are produced. Smith Woodhouse Vintage Port is made exclusively from one harvest at our vineyards in the Rio Torto, one of the finest vineyard areas in the Douro Valley. Following 2 years in oak, we transfer the wine unfiltered to bottle, where it can mature for decades. It is during this long bottle ageing that the young wine is transformed into a magnificent Vintage Port. The winter leading up to the 2003 vintage was unusually wet, with double the normal read more... read more... rainfall, but this was balanced by higher than normal temperatures throughout the year. Budburst came early after a warm spring, in mid-march. Excellent flowering conditions and continued hot weather greatly benefited the development of the bunches, and some welcome rain refreshed the vineyards in July. The intense heat of the summer months hastened the ripening of the fruit. The harvest started on the 22nd September, under ideal conditions, and just in time to avoid the first heavy rains of the coming autumn. The yields were low but the grape-musts had intense colour and aroma, clearly destined to develop into superb wines.

Portugal's Douro Valley is one of the most spectacular wine growing regions in the world. Its beauty is the result of many centuries of work by the river Douro itself, carving steep, towering banks into the landscape, and by the inhabitants of this region, who centuries ago undertook the nearly impossible task of planting vineyards here. Forming terraces on these rocky slopes was difficult enough, but the harsh climate and limited rainfall, characteristic of the Douro Valley, made the work of winemaking a difficult enterprise indeed. The rewards of this labor are the superb wines of the Douro, wines that have taken their place among the best in the world. Smith Woodhouse wines come from the Upper Douro, famous for its top rated production. The majority of the wines are still produced by treading the grapes by foot in stone lagares. Smith Woodhouse’s wines are largely sourced from the Madalena vineyard. This small Quinta (vineyard property) has the highest “A” quality rating and is located in the Rio Torto district, acknowledged as one of the finest Port growing areas. Over the coming years, the recently acquired Quinta do Vale Coelho, further upriver in the Douro Superior, will gradually form an important component of Smith Woodhouse’s Ports. Read less

Classic Vintage Ports are only declared in exceptional years when conditions have been perfect and wines of outstanding quality are produced. This bottle is no exception and today, is just beginning to evolve with aromas of blood orange, berries and warm spices.
