Smith Woodhouse 2007
Winemaker's Notes:
I enjoyed this wine's slightly edgier feel. Not perhaps as polished assome of its rivals, it nevertheless retains the potential to last as long asany and it is, reassuringly, easier on the wallet than most. Previous Portdeclarations always reveal an outsider, and this could in time rival some ofthe more fancied names for 2007. (Tom Cave, Berrys' Cellar Plan Manager)

Portugal's Douro Valley is one of the most spectacular wine growing regions in the world. Its beauty is the result of many centuries of work by the river Douro itself, carving steep, towering banks into the landscape, and by the inhabitants of this region, who centuries ago undertook the nearly impossible task of planting vineyards here.
Forming terraces on these rocky slopes was difficult enough, but the harsh climate and limited rainfall, characteristic of the Douro Valley, made the work of winemaking a difficult enterprise indeed.
The rewards of this labor are the superb wines of the Douro, wines that have taken their place among the best in the world.
Smith Woodhouse wines come from the Upper Douro, famous for its top rated production. The majority of the wines are still produced by treading the grapes by foot in stone lagares. Smith Woodhouse’s wines are largely sourced from the Madalena vineyard. This small Quinta (vineyard property) has the highest “A” quality rating and is located in the Rio Torto district, acknowledged as one of the finest Port growing areas. Over the coming years, the recently acquired Quinta do Vale Coelho, further upriver in the Douro Superior, will gradually form an important component of Smith Woodhouse’s Ports.
