Smith Madrone Riesling Napa Valley Estate Bottled 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

Hailing from Santa Monica, California, Stu and Charles Smith makes artisanal wines in the Spring Mountain District of Napa Valley. A drive up to the winery will lead you away from the hustle and bustle of the Napa Valley floor, and into the gentle mountain ranges. A lone madrone tree sits next to the winery built by Stu and Charlie with lumber and stone from the property. Making possibly one of the best Rieslings in Napa, the brothers let mother nature do much of the work. Since their first vintage in 1977, the brothers have always followed their believes in the potential of growing grapes in the mountain region, this allowing the vines to "struggle" and send their roots deep in search for water and nutrients to produce the precise amount of fruit proportionate to their vigor, and skin to juice ratio. Quality, heart, and soul go into the production of their wines. Each year, the wines are made from the same vineyards, pruned by the same people in the same way, cultivated in exactly the same manner, and harvested at similar levels of maturity, then allowing mother nature to give each vintage its unique flavors and character. This is truly a diamond in the rough and a great food wine. Limited production of 450 cases for the 2010 vintage.

Tasting Notes:

This is a fantastic Riesling that is well balanced and elegant. It offers a distinct aroma of apple, fresh peach, apricot and flowers. There are flavors of stone fruit, minerality, and apple on the palate. Dry, medium to medium full body, with firm acidity, and long finish. An excellent wine to pair with food. Riesling is the perfect compliment with Asian food, but also try it with a simple roasted chicken served with roasted root vegetable for a culinary treat! 12.9% Alc. Content.
