Smith Madrone Chardonnay 2014

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Tight, lean and somewhat reticent on the nose with a nice butchers wax top note over ripe, soft peach, orange and apple fruits. On the palate there's some nutty oak here and a touch of wood tannin under the core of fairly ripe fruit that shows hints of apple butter and rich, sweet almond-tinged apple fruit. The texture is a touch softer than the 2010, showing a little slippery edge on the long finish along with the lush fruit. 91pts

Cool on the nose with a very fine, crisp orchard fruit aroma that is supported by almond butter notes. With good acidity offering a nice mineral wash on entry, this builds to exhibit lovey fruit that once again shows a bit of nutty but not terribly oaky character on the palate. The finish is clean, focused and mineral-rich with some aromatic, lightly bacon-toned oak notes. The texture is really lovely here, pretty tense with lovely clear apple and lemon fruit that is long, elegant and really quite nuanced. 92pts

Beautifully rich without being buttery or oak. Ripe citrus and tropical fruit aromas and flavors, with definite mango notes.

A beautiful, big Chard with soft apple fruit and luscious texture. Restrained oak that's off-stage but whispering. Unusual for a big Napa chard and worth seeking out.

Concentrated intense orange apricot and mineral flavors characterize this Chardonnay as does a brisk cut of acidity. It handles the 100% new French oak with notes of buttered toast and sweet wood sap almost dominating. But then the ripe fruit comes swirling back providing dynamic tension. Drink this flashy young Chardonnay in the next few years with lobsters scallops and mushroom risotto. Wine Enthusiast.

Rating: 86/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the October 2010 issue. The Smith-Madrone winery style has never been one of extravagance, and this clean but fairly underplayed wine fits expectations to a "tee". Medium-bodied, a touch still in feel and showing an edge of chalk at the finish, it never speaks with a commanding voice and necessarily needs pairing with similarly subtle foods.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Unlikely to improve with further aging.

Wine Tasting NotesThis Chardonnay has the most beautiful pale light yellow color, yet when you swirl the wine in your glass and see the viscosity of the wine, your mind starts thinking big. Then the powerful aroma gives you another hint that this is not just some innocuous Chardonnay made for the masses, and finally the taste confirms just what a special wine this is truly a mouth filling Chardonnay with loads of flavors to scintillate your taste buds.
