Smith Madrone Cabernet Sauvignon 2009
Very fresh on the nose with an early touch of light mocha cream, some smoke, fines herbs with a nice minty top note over bright black fruits. On entry this shows bright acids and feels remarkably transparent, bathing the tongue with bright, tart, blackberry fruit that has just a little medicinal edge. The finish is nice, rich and soft with excellent length and lovely cherry fruit on the finale. This just feels lovely in the mouth—what a great texture. 93ptsAdd winemaker's notes
Smith-Madrone is a family-run estate-bottled winery dedicated to producing fine wines wines exclusively from its own vineyards. The winery was founded in 1971 with the purchase of 200 acres high atop Spring Mountain west of St. Helena in the northern Napa Valley.

Fruity and quite intense on the nose, with big black fruit that is deep and ripe topped with herb and carob aromas. This feels a bit like Bordeaux in the mouth, ripe yet perfectly clear, with great cut and layers of wild cherry, plum, and blackberry fruits. There are firm tannins, but this is so well balanced they are certainly unobtrusive. There’s a lovely lifted hint of mint on the back end that contrasts with the very fine edge of dry extract ,adding richness to the vibrant finish. A pretty powerful wine that has great energy in the mouth. 93pts
A little earthy, a little leafy and mineral-accented gorgeous blackcurrant fruit greets the nose capped with hints of mocha and lightly roasted coffee. This is tight, lean, and focused on the palate delivering pure, rich, ripe yet totally transparent fruit supported by wonderfully ripe tannins that poke through just a hint on the finish, showing a slight little stern and dry note before it ends with beautiful cut red plum fruit and subtle soil tones on the finale. 92pts
Very true to type, this shows modest evolution when compared with the later releases offering up wonderful plum, black cherry and blackberry fruit framed with integrating mocha oak notes and topped with nice green herbal elements. In the mouth, it shows incipient softening from age, though the tannins remains a touch obvious. There is a broadening on the palate with fine richness and nuance. Herb, anise and mineral notes pop on the back end along with some nutty oak elements on the long, rich, smooth finish. This could use another 2-5 years in the cellar to really hit its stride, but even today it’s just classic Cabernet Sauvignon that blends purity, detail and power like few other Cabs from Napa. This will seem a touch rustic to some, but for my palate it’s spot-on. 93pts

Not a "blow you into the weeds powerhouse" California Cab. Also, this wine does not blow me over with tannin like other examples from Spring Mountain. This is a civilized wine that shows some berry/cassis/plum fruit, but not enough to be distractive. Seems closer to French style than California. US$29.68 at Total Wines.
Full bodied, rich, long full mouth finish. Needs a good steak.
Way too young but still great. Beautifly mountain fruit flavors.

Wine Tasting NotesOur Cabernet Sauvignon is dark red in color, with hints of mint, cedar, black cherry and blueberries from the Cabernet Franc, with just a dash of pepper mixed in. Whats great about this wine is that its wonderfully complex aroma comes through on the taste, thus making this wine truly balanced. There are moderate tannins which will allow extended aging, yet the wine is enjoyable now as well, especially with strong flavored foods or meat.
