Sloan Proprietary Red 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2009 Sloan possesses lots of espresso roast, chocolate fudge, baking spice, cedarwood, incense, creme de cassis, blackberry and subtle smoke characteristics. Surprisingly soft tannins are atypical for this vintage, but they work well and frame this full-bodied, concentrated, multidimensional wine. One of the finest Sloans made to date, it can be drunk now or cellared for 25-30 years...98" WA 10/13 "Original proprietor Stuart Sloan sold this property to the Hong Kong-based Pan family, and the affable Jenny Pan is now in charge. The winemaker continues to be Martha McClellan and the consultant is Michel Rolland. From this fabulous site, the Pans produced a 2009 and 2010 that are about as spectacular as these Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines can be. They are normally around 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a tiny percentage of Petit Verdot.

Sloan Estate is a cult winery founded by Seattle entrepreneur Stuart Sloan, an avid collector of Bordeaux and California wines who decided to produce his own label based out of Napa, California in the 1990s. Superstar winemaker Mark Aubert oversaw the first wines, and these early releases garnered raves, sending prices into the stratosphere and creating a very long waiting list for the mere 600 cases produced. Martha McClellan has been at the helm for the past several years. The 12-acre estate produces blends from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot. Later vintages have been known to sell at prices starting around $600 a bottle, with much more fetched at auction. In 2011, Sloan sold the business to Asian investors, but McClellan has stated that operations will continue as before.  Read less

Vintage: 2006 09/22/2010

Deep ruby. Superripe aromas of blueberry, liquid graphite, violet, licorice and dark chocolate. Large-scaled, dense and primary; more muscular and a bit less harmonious at this early stage than the 2005 but also wonderfully creamy. Not quite as sweet... Stephen Tanzer's IWC.
