Siro Pacenti Brunello di Montalcino 2013

Member Review by Bob Fyke:

The nose first shows firm masculine black cherry and black berry fruit with aromatic wood and some incense. On the palate, solid black cherry, some sweet tobacco and Earthy underbrush lead into a long, mouthwatering finish that has fine grip, and lingering tobacco notes. 91Pts

At Vinitaly this year in Verona (April 2010), I sat with Giancarlo Pacenti, the 40-year-old vignaiolo of Siro Pacenti and son of Siro, and we tasted this 2005 Brunello, his 2004 Brunello PS, and his 2008 Rosso di Montalcino. You won’t mistake Giancarlo’s 2005 Brunello for either the 2004 PS or his 2004 normale Brunello wines, yet it’s an interesting and pretty wine bursting with red berries and plums, a nose with floral notes of violet and rose, and a soft finish with medium length. Giancarlo views this vintage as “ready to go now,” although a year or two of aging might balance out the fruit. Few wines can be called seductive, but the forward fruit, medium body and floral notes will seduce you into buying a case or two. Pairing, finding and buying: The softer, medium body of this wine will pair well with ribollita, bean soups, and tomato-based sauces. Try it with a meat-based pasta sauce like Bolognese ragu on paparadelle. Cin Cin! Michael

[Meat sauce] Opening this was mistake. Just arrived from Sherry-Lehmann; was room temp; not thrilled with the service. Decanted for 30mins. Anyway . . . candied cherries, overwhelming tannins. Still think its great but not a good taste.

The 2008 Brunello di Montalcino is deep, textured and impeccably balanced. Dark cherries, plums, tobacco, crushed rocks and spices blossom in the glass. Here, too, the overall sense of harmony is utterly captivating. A gorgeous wine, the 2008 stands out for its exceptional polish. The style is a bit deeper, richer and more layered than the Pelagrilli, but at the same time remains deeply marked by the prevalence of fruit from the northern side of Montalcino. In 2008 Pacenti lost about a third of his production from the south, which means this is a vintage in which the Brunello incorporated more fruit from the north than the south, roughly a 60/40 split. This is a fabulous effort in a vintage that proved to be full of challenges. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2028. - Robert Parker 95 Points Violet, black currant and cherry aromas and flavors define this supple, harmonious Brunello, which is elegant and intense, with dusty yet ripe tannins lending support. It all comes together on the lingering, spice- and mineral-tinged aftertaste. Best from 2017 through 2035. 2,500 cases made. –BS - Wine Spectator Magazine 94 Points Siro Pacenti hits the nail on the head with a wine that is concentrated and rich, but elegant and fresh at the same time. Fleshy extraction is supported by black cherry, licorice, rum cake, leather and spice. The wine’s natural freshness offsets that fruity richness and drives a long, smooth finish. Drink after 2016. - M.L. - Wine Enthusiast Magazine 93 Points
