Since the 1995 vintage, Giancarlo Pacenti's Brunello has annually won Gambero Rosso's most prestigious Tre Bicchieri (Three Glass) award. These are quintessential Sangioveses that are wonderfully aromatic, opulently rich and powerfully structured. Giancarlo is considered to be one of the top Brunello pruducers.

The 2003 Brunello di Montalcino is all about understatement and balance. Crushed flowers, raspberries and spices all emerge from this gorgeous, soft-textured wine. Notes of underbrush, tobacco and tar add further complexity on the mid-palate as the wine opens to reveal outstanding length and complexity. This is truly a remarkable effort, particularly in the way the tannins are so seamlessly integrated into the wine. While the 2003 Brunello doesnandrsquo;t quite reach the level of his superb 2001, this wine should be on readersandrsquo; short lists of wines to seek out in 2003. It is a commendable effort in every way. Anticipated maturity: 2008andndash;2018.

Like finely woven silk. Incredible texture to this subtle and complex red, with black licorice, mineral and blackberry. Full-bodied and thick, yet reserved and refined. Very classy. Giancarlo Pacento is a master winemaker. Best after 2004.

Pacenti's mid-weight 2001 Brunello di Montalcino is made in a very similar style to the Rosso. A lively ruby, it opens with a finely nuanced, fresh nose, followed by a delicate core of ripe fruit that bursts onto the palate with exceptional elegance, purity, and finesse. Silky, fine tannins frame the finish of this unforgettable, profound Brunello. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2019.

Gorgeous, perfumed aromas of cherry, strawberry and raspberry follow through to a full body, with super well-integrated tannins and a long finish. Wonderfully crafted for the vintage. Best after 2009.

The Brunello di Montalcino is a huge, dense wine that explodes from the glass with tar, smoke, earthiness black cherries and minerals. The wine possesses dazzling concentration and tons of richness, as waves of fruit coat the palate in stunning style. This big, dramatic Brunello needs time in bottle, but it is nothing short of magnificent today. The balance, and the integration of the French oak in particular, is brilliant. For those who are curious to try a bottle now, the wine should be opened a few hours in advance as the tannins are imposing at this stage. This is a rare Brunello of superb pedigree and complexity. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029.
