Sine Qua Non Syrah California Atlantis Fe2o3 1a B & C 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

100 points Robert Parker: The perfect 2005 Syrah Atlantis Fe 203-1a,b,c is a blend of 93% Syrah, 5% Grenache, and 2% Viognier, with 25% whole clusters. Whereas the Ode to E is all from the Eleven Confessions Vineyard, this cuvee is a combination of 43% from the estate vineyard, 28% from the White Hawk Vineyard, 21% from the Alban Vineyard, and 8% from the Bien Nacido Vineyard. The good news is there are nearly 1,500 cases of this recently released offering. An extraordinarily flowery nose interwoven with scents of blueberries, blackberries, incense, and graphite soars from the glass. Although not the biggest or most concentrated Syrah Krankl has made, it is one of the most nuanced, elegant, and complex. It remains full-bodied, but builds incrementally on the palate, and comes across as elegant and delicate, especially when compared to many California Syrahs. Nevertheless, the intensity is mind-boggling, and the finish lasts for nearly a minute. Drink this amazing effort over the next 10-15+ years.

Sine Qua Non is the California cult wine created by Austrian winemaker Manfred Krankl and wife Elaine. These highly in-demand wines, which consistently received near perfect scores from critic Robert Parker, can fetch upwards of $500 a bottle and can only be had through their über exclusive mailing list or via auction. The wines are Rhone style blends in red and white, kept to a small production of 3,500 cases a year. The name is Latin for “without which not” or more fittingly to fans, “something that cannot be done without.” The “winery” (not open to the public) is a warehouse in Ventura, California, originally founded during Krankl’s stint as owner of restaurant Campanile, for which the first wines were produced in 1994. The first wines were produced from fruit sourced in various locations in California and other including Oregon, but he now grows most of his own grapes in small vineyards in Ojai Valley and Sta Rita Hills.    One of the unique elements of these wines is that since Krankl believes each vintage tells its own story, the name of the wines change with each vintage, as do the self-designed labels and even bottle shapes. Some of the original wines were Pinot Noir, which he no longer produces, the last one in 2005 called “Over and Out.” Now the wines are predominately Rhone blends, with names such as “Whisperin E” (named for wife Elaine), “Pagan Poetry Rosé,” “Poker Face,” and “Mr. K The Noble Man” (dessert wines produced with Austrian colleague Alois Kracher).  Read less

Hits some high, floral notes off the nose. Dominating palate, with a lush, silky mouthfeel, explosive red and dark fruits, but then finishing seemlessly, with precision and maybe even a bit of magic this wine has big and flavorful fruit combined with elegance and balance.

Wonderfully complex. Even after decanting it continued to open up revealing more incense, blueberry and baking spices. Hard to imagine a better syrah
