What to Expect

Syrah: One of the few grapes to really be a global success. Syrah combines a meaty core of ripe berry fruit with tones that range from herbal to peppery in a package that tends to be medium bodied with good acidity and softer tannins. With age the wines can gain lovely leathery and black olive notes that make them a great match for savory and gamy dishes.

Reviews

Rating: 93/100 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 108, May/June 2003 ($87; 14.9% alcohol; a blend of 88% syrah, 10% grenache and 2% viognier) Vivid, deep ruby-red. Knockout nose combines roasted cherry, gunflint, smoked meat and mint. Fat, sweet and lush, with compelling concentration and sweetness of fruit. As pliant and generous as this is, it's also vibrant and firm. Finishes extremely long and ripely tannic, with superb lingering sweetness. A great California syrah, with very subtle oakiness for a red from this producer.

Had a bottle for Thanksgiving 2008 and it was outstanding. Huge nose when uncorked and the wine just kept getting bigger and better as it opened up. Some wines don't live up to the hype, this one did and then some.
