- Patrick Bize told me that he had less yield in 2002 than in 2001, noting that we brought in everything between 30 and 40 hl/ha with such good sugars that we did virtually no chaptalization; we had a few wines come in at or near 14% natural. I very much like the style of the vintage as it rounds out some of our more rustic terroirs because the tannins are relatively fine and sophisticated. The wines are also very fresh, which I partially attribute to the long malos and we basically didn't rack until the mise, which was done without fining or filtration. They are also somewhat tender and forward so I elected read more...to bottle earlier than normal, which in this case means between October and January. I didn't think they had anything to gain by remaining in barrel, except incurring the risk of drying out somewhat. In terms of style, the vintage reminds me a great deal of 1978 because the textures are so similar. Whether 2002 will age like the '78s have is an open question but I am unreservedly enthusiastic about the quality of the Bize '02s. These are wines to lay in by case as Savigny, even among the village's top producers like Bize and Pavelot, represents outstanding value. (Vineyard Brands, Birmingham, AL; John Armit Wines, Howard Ripley, Bibendum, Ball Brothers and S.H. Jones, all UK). As it almost always is when the vintage is ripe, this is Bize's top Savigny and a lovely, altogether classy wine it is too. Delicious, precise, pure and fully suffused with an intense minerality, all complemented by sappy, fresh and deep old vine sap and complexity. In short, this is a great Savigny that has the structure to age for 15 years but easily last for another 10 after that. (hide)

- opened one night earlier, vacu-vined and refrigerated. Beautiful nose with roses, ripe, crushed black cherries, smoke and iodine. The palate has tremendous minerality, pure ripe cherry fruit, with a lot of power wrapped in an elegant frame. I thought this was absolutely delicious.
