Simi Winery Merlot Alexander Valley 2015

Member Review by tabednar:

Very classic for the Merlot variety. Nice oak nose with hints of black berries. Burgundy color. Very dry and filled with tannins with a balanced acidity. Tastes of cherry but ultimately overwhelmed by the tannins. Opens up after some time and may be matured well over time.

A lot of what we do at Simi is based on tradition, enhanced with cutting-edge innovation. Our philosophy has always been to maintain the quality and style that we're recognized for, while at the same time improve our methods for growing grapes and crafting wines to reflect the experience and knowledge we are accumulating and have been throughout the winery's 125-year history. Long ago we also realized the importance of Alexander Valley and knew that it would be a leading appellation for growing Bordeaux varietals. Today we showcase the region with our Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot as well as our vineyard-designated Landslide Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1989 we purchased our Russian River Valley Goldfields Vineyard and planted it to hand-selected original cuttings from some of the best and oldest vineyards in California. This innovative technique gives us the amazing diversity of flavors that has made Simi's Russian River Reserve Chardonnay famous. Simi's unique vineyards are the genesis of our distinct wines. Our warm Alexander Valley Estate Vineyards are planted primarily to red Bordeaux varietals and are the source of Simi's Cabernet Sauvignon. These vineyards encompass nearly 600 acres and possess some of the most diverse soils of any wine-growing region, resulting from eons of geologic activity including a catastrophic landslide which changed the course of the Russian River. Complementing the Alexander Valley Vineyards, Simi's 120-acre Goldfields Vineyard in the Russian River Valley is the backbone of the Simi Chardonnay. Planted with a wide array of clones and field selections, Goldfields Vineyard is one of the most diverse vineyards in the Russian River Valley and all of California. With every taste of Simi wines you'll discover our devotion to tradition that is enhanced by our pursuit of the best vineyards, the best grape-growing methods, and the best winemaking techniques. Rich, deep black-ruby hue, aromas of black stone fruits and fruitcake, flavor notes of black cherries, black plums, baking spice and sweet wood that carry to a long, graceful finish.

WINEMAKER NOTES: Deep garnet with a ruby edge, our 2012 Sonoma County Merlot is has rich, dark notes of blackberry and plum with cocoa, nutmeg, and earthy hints of cedar and bay laurel. Smoky bacon notes frame bright fruit aromas into a compelling mixture of bright fruit with exotic spice and toast. Red and dark fruits play off each other with layer after luscious layer—both youthful and concentrated. We’re happy with the wine’s structure and its wonderfully balanced acidity. Plum follows through on the palate, along with black cherry and rich blackberry preserves, lightly lifted by toast and vanilla notes. This medium- to full-bodied Merlot possesses depth and richness, finishing with youthful tannins. We think you’d enjoy pairing with wild mushroom risotto, goat cheese ravioli with brown butter and hazelnuts, or a roasted lamb leg with stone fruit chutney. VINEYARDS: Greatness often shows itself from the very beginning, and that’s true for the Alexander Valley which first achieved fame for its red wines in the 1860s. Today the Alexander Valley remains focused on reds, in particular Bordeaux varieties such as Merlot. Most of the fruit for this wine, rich with blackberry and plum, comes from the Alexander Valley including grapes from our Red Fan and Los Amigos estate vineyards. We harvested another 7% of the fruit from our Goldfields estate vineyard which exhibits the red cherry and light spice of the cooler and foggier Russian River Valley. The remaining fruit comes from the warmer, sunnier Sonoma Valley known for its depth, richness, and light licorice spice. VINTAGE 2012: 2012 was a great growing season for red varietals. A wet spring with rains stopping at flowering set up an extended growing season with moderate temperatures of 88-90°F. Cool nights and foggy mornings allowed for a slow, gentle ripening, giving full fruit expression and ripe tannins. We harvested the grapes for this wine earlier than last year, starting on September 15 and finishing on October 24. Brix levels at harvest were precisely what we hope for with Merlot, ranging from 23.3 to 25.4°. We couldn’t be happier with the results of this growing season: Big fruit flavors with concentration, elegance, and brilliant acidity. WINEMAKING: We fermented our 2012 Sonoma County Merlot in stainless steel, with daily pump-overs to increase color and flavor extraction. For the same reason, we left the juice on the skins for a generous 21 days to allow rich flavors and dense color to develop. All of the wine then underwent a secondary, malolactic fermentation before being aged for 14 months in a combination of small French and American oak barrels, of which 20% were new. We blended this Merlot with small amounts of three other red Bordeaux varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon (12%), Malbec (1%), and Cabernet Franc (1%). Varietal Composition: 87% Merlot 12% Cabernet Sauvignon 1% Malbec 1% Cabernet Franc Aging: 100% oak aged for 14 months in a combination of small French and American oak barrels; 20% new Total Acidity: 5.7 g/L pH: 3.65 Residual Sugar: 0.6 g/L Alcohol: 13.5%

Deep garnet with a ruby edge, our 2010 Sonoma County Merlot is spicy, elegant, and versatile with layer after luscious layer of red and black fruit playing off of each other. We're happy with the wine's structure and its wonderfully balanced acidity. The nose is a treasure trove of dark baking spices including clove and nutmeg, and it also offers earthy hints of black pepper, cedar, bay laurel, and sweet vanilla notes delightfully framing bright fruit aromas of blackberry, red cherry, and plum. Plum follows through on the palate, along with black cherry and rich blackberry preserves lightly lifted by toast and vanilla notes. This medium-boded wine finishes with soft, yet insistent cocoa tannins. We think you'd enjoy this Merlot with garlic spot prawns and mushroom pizza, cedar-smoked squab with Merlot-grape compote, or roasted salmon with wild risotto cake. - WineryAppellation: Sonoma CountyVarietal Composition:94% Merlot3% Cabernet Sauvignon2% Malbec1% Cabernet FrancFermentation: 100% stainless steelAging: 100% oak aged for 18 months in a combination of small French and American oak barrels; 23% newTotal Acidity: 6.4 g/LpH: 3.53Alcohol: 13.5%

Deep garnet with a ruby edge, our 2009 Sonoma County Merlot is spicy and a bit dark and brooding as it opens with aromas of exotic sandalwood, sweet dark spices, cloves, and cinnamon along with hints of black pepper and bay. The rich, dark character continues with layered flavors of red plum, black cherry, and blackberry preserves, framed with notes of toasty oak, that give depth to this medium-bodied, nicely structured wine. The finish offers soft cocoa tannins. We suggest you enjoy this Merlot with exotic mushroom and oven-dried Roma tomato polenta torte, panroasted duck breast with Bing cherry sauce, or roasted salmon and goat cheese latke. - WineryAppellation: Sonoma CountyVarietal Composition:98% Merlot2% Cabernet SauvignonFermentation: 100% stainless steelAging: 22 months in a combination of small French and American oak barrels (32% new)Total Acidity: 5.8 g/LpH: 3.65Alcohol: 13.5%Bottling Date: January 18, 2012Release Date: February 8, 2012Cases Produced: 15,484
