Simi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Landslide Vineyard Alexander Valley 2014

Member Review by pboss:

Fruit forward, light cabernet from Simi. Although no one else I was with seemed to like it, I though this cab was quite drinkable with my only complaint being the drying tannins. Would repeat, though I am not sure the wife would agree.

A lot of what we do at Simi is based on tradition, enhanced with cutting-edge innovation. Our philosophy has always been to maintain the quality and style that we're recognized for, while at the same time improve our methods for growing grapes and crafting wines to reflect the experience and knowledge we are accumulating and have been throughout the winery's 125-year history. Long ago we also realized the importance of Alexander Valley and knew that it would be a leading appellation for growing Bordeaux varietals. Today we showcase the region with our Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot as well as our vineyard-designated Landslide Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1989 we purchased our Russian River Valley Goldfields Vineyard and planted it to hand-selected original cuttings from some of the best and oldest vineyards in California. This innovative technique gives us the amazing diversity of flavors that has made Simi's Russian River Reserve Chardonnay famous. Simi's unique vineyards are the genesis of our distinct wines. Our warm Alexander Valley Estate Vineyards are planted primarily to red Bordeaux varietals and are the source of Simi's Cabernet Sauvignon. These vineyards encompass nearly 600 acres and possess some of the most diverse soils of any wine-growing region, resulting from eons of geologic activity including a catastrophic landslide which changed the course of the Russian River. Complementing the Alexander Valley Vineyards, Simi's 120-acre Goldfields Vineyard in the Russian River Valley is the backbone of the Simi Chardonnay. Planted with a wide array of clones and field selections, Goldfields Vineyard is one of the most diverse vineyards in the Russian River Valley and all of California. With every taste of Simi wines you'll discover our devotion to tradition that is enhanced by our pursuit of the best vineyards, the best grape-growing methods, and the best winemaking techniques. Refreshing, enjoyed with ravioli in a light sausage, arugula and fresh tomatoes. Would purchase again in a heartbeat! Think we purchased at Costco or Bevmo at around $15.

Beautiful purple, great by itself - fun to drink casually if you're looking for something more than a table wine but not overpowering tannins. Wonderful aromas.

Vineyards: Millions of years of geological and seismic upheaval created our Landslide Vineyard, named for a slide so massive it changed the course of the Russian River. The river cut through the land and deposited the minerals, rock, clay, and loam that make up Landslide’s distinctive soil composition. The topography of this 170-acre vineyard, planted exclusively to red Bordeaux varietals, is so varied that we view it and farm it as three distinct blocks: Uplands (provides structure and density, inspiring a huge back-of-the-mouth sensation with high tannins), Midlands (producing powerful wines with more weight on the mid-palate and higher tannin levels), and Lowlands (wines produced from these blocks yield riper berry character with softer, more elegant tannin structure). Bud break, flowering, veraison, and harvest occur at different times within each of these sections. The nearby Pacific Ocean exerts its influence by bringing cool fog in the mornings and evenings to temper the warm days. Vintage: 2014 was an easy harvest for red varietals. A dry spring with gentle rain that stopped just at flowering set up an extended ripening season with moderate daytime temperatures of 80-92°F. Cool nights and foggy mornings made for a slow, gentle ripening. This cooler vintage gave way to wines with strong varietal character, elegance, balance, aging potential, and Old World character. We began picking the fruit for this wine by hand on September 15 and finished on October 18. Our Brix at harvest ranged from 24.6 to 26.5 degrees. Winemaking: SIMI Landslide Cabernet Sauvignon reflects our dramatic estate vineyard in the Alexander Valley where the fruit for this wine was grown. We blended in 9% Cabernet Franc to add an element of spice and cassis, and 6% Merlot to add softness and suppleness. Small amounts of Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Tannat add even more dimension to the aromatics and rich fruit flavors. During fermentation, the developing wine remained on the skins for 31 days to increase extraction and color. We followed this primary fermentation with malolactic fermentation for all of the wine before aging it in small French oak barrels (56% new) for 24 months. Winemaker Notes: This vintage, our Landslide Vineyard produced a wine that is youthful, full bodied, elegant, and welcoming. It’s a wine to watch grow and develop. Appearance: Opaque deep red with a vibrant ruby edge. Aromatics: The nose shows cassis, red plum, and black cherry before opening up to cocoa, vanilla, and baking spice with toast, sweet herb, and floral notes. Inviting, fresh, and intriguing, this wine will continue to integrate flavors and aromas over time. Flavors: On the palate, red berries, cassis, blackberry, and plum. Structured and elegant with balanced acidity. Fresh red fruit on the entry followed by a broad mid-palate. Toasty, sweet oak frames the fruit and lends structure. The wine finishes with supple, ripe tannins and bittersweet cocoa. The acid balance makes this wine inviting, rich, and delicious. Pairings: This Cabernet Sauvignon pairs beautifully with wood-grilled rib-eye with braised wild mushrooms, lamb loin with red pepper and onions, or pappardelle pasta with tomato and black pepper ragu. VARIETAL COMPOSITION: 77% Cabernet Sauvignon 9% Cabernet Franc 6% Merlot 5% Petit Verdot 2% Malbec 1% Tannat AGING: 100% oak-aged for 24 months in French oak barrels, 56% new TOTAL ACIDITY: 5.7g/L pH: 3.69 RESIDUAL SUGAR: 0.7g/L ALCOHOL: 14.5%
