Simi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 2015

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Very sweet and assertive on the nose, but the integrated spice notes meld well with green and smoked peppers. Lot’s of emergent red cassis notes. Smells pretty fresh and well balanced. Medium bodied, a bit too much drying tannin right up front and a touch lean on the mid-palate but with nice freshness, and a good balance of fruit, earth, and wood spice notes. Refreshing acidity and decent length but the finale is a bit bitter. This ends up feeling a bit too extracted and comes off a touch clumsy in the end. 85pts

A lot of what we do at Simi is based on tradition, enhanced with cutting-edge innovation. Our philosophy has always been to maintain the quality and style that we're recognized for, while at the same time improve our methods for growing grapes and crafting wines to reflect the experience and knowledge we are accumulating and have been throughout the winery's 125-year history. Long ago we also realized the importance of Alexander Valley and knew that it would be a leading appellation for growing Bordeaux varietals. Today we showcase the region with our Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot as well as our vineyard-designated Landslide Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1989 we purchased our Russian River Valley Goldfields Vineyard and planted it to hand-selected original cuttings from some of the best and oldest vineyards in California. This innovative technique gives us the amazing diversity of flavors that has made Simi's Russian River Reserve Chardonnay famous. Simi's unique vineyards are the genesis of our distinct wines. Our warm Alexander Valley Estate Vineyards are planted primarily to red Bordeaux varietals and are the source of Simi's Cabernet Sauvignon. These vineyards encompass nearly 600 acres and possess some of the most diverse soils of any wine-growing region, resulting from eons of geologic activity including a catastrophic landslide which changed the course of the Russian River. Complementing the Alexander Valley Vineyards, Simi's 120-acre Goldfields Vineyard in the Russian River Valley is the backbone of the Simi Chardonnay. Planted with a wide array of clones and field selections, Goldfields Vineyard is one of the most diverse vineyards in the Russian River Valley and all of California. With every taste of Simi wines you'll discover our devotion to tradition that is enhanced by our pursuit of the best vineyards, the best grape-growing methods, and the best winemaking techniques. Really good fruit on the nose at first, in a restrained style with lovely bay and vanilla tones adding complexity a little cigar wrapper as well. Overall a sweet, gentle herbal and slightly medicinal impression. Very smooth and suave at first with good fruit but also quite astringent tannins. Not particularly tannic but with a gritty edge to the tannins. Earthy and dark, with baked spice tones that compliment the red plum skin, apple skin, and wild berry fruit. This is a bit too woody with quite the spiced and vanilla toned finish that is very drying. The tannins need to mellow for this to show better. Give it 2 years. 2011-2020 88pts

Reticent at first then quite seductive with deep black raspberry fruit joined by creamy oak and nutty nuances and finally a floral top note. In the mouth this is soft and still creamy with confected notes of black cherry and chocolate dominating a mid-palate, which has not structural center. On the backend the oak gains the upper hand and the finish is limp and dominated by oaky flavors. This has seen better days and appears to be only a shadow of it’s former self. 84pts

Haven't had Simi in years and almost forgot how nice their wines are. Soft tannins and mouth feel. Decent structure and a nice nose. Another good Canernet in the $20 range. Cheers!

Dark fruit with an earthy taste, hints of leather and tobacco. Medium to full bodied, slightly tannic should age well for a few more years I enjoy this wine and the other SIMI offerings (Landslide and the Reserve) I will definitely purchase this again.

Fruity nose. A bit hot, and somewhat tannic, but with an amazing, rich finish. A nice steak would exponentially improve this wine.

Vineyards: Alexander Valley was shaped by dramatic geologic activity—from an ancient landslide that changed the course of the Russian River to earthquake upheavals that redistributed entire mountaintops. The region’s incredible diversity of soil types and microclimates produces wines with velvety textures and bright, luscious flavors. SIMI Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon reflects the best of Alexander Valley, where Cabernet Sauvignon grapes tend to offer blackberry and mulberry fruit, soft, ripe tannins, and a bit of spice for added interest. Vintage: 2015 was a great growing season for red varietals. Spring began with minimal rain. Warm weather set up an early growing/ripening season with moderate daytime temperatures of 85–92°F, giving full fruit expression. Cool nights and foggy mornings made for a slow, gentle ripening. We began picking the fruit for this wine on September 9 and finished on October 20. Our Brix at harvest ranged from 24 to 27.1 degrees. Winemaking: We turned to two of our estate vineyards, Los Amigos—a classic valley floor vineyard, and Red Fan—a foothill vineyard with great sun exposure, to form the backbone of this wine. We also used fruit from other noted Alexander Valley vineyards, including Encinos, Big River, Hoot Owl Creek, Hoffman, and Belle Terre. We blended in 2% Cabernet Franc to add an element of spice and cassis, and 13% Merlot to add softness and suppleness. 1% Malbec and 1% Petit Verdot add even more dimension to the aromatics and rich fruit flavors. During fermentation, the developing wine remained on the skins for 22 days to increase extraction and color. All of the wine underwent a secondary, malolactic fermentation and was then aged in small oak barrels (25% new) for 14 months. Winemaker Notes: SIMI 2015 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is dark garnet in color with a ruby edge. Toasty oak frames and adds depth to dark fruit aromas of blackberry, plum, and black cherry, leading into intriguing notes of cocoa, cassis, pepper berry, and cedar. Black fruit dominates the entry followed by plum and black cherry with a spicy, lifted mid-palate. A bit of peppery cassis leads the finish with some roasted coffee notes and supple yet firm tannins. Our Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is incredibly food friendly and not a puzzle to pair with. It will bring out the best in grilled steaks with roasted mushrooms, Moroccan spiced lamb, and braised duck breast with carrot purée. VARIETAL COMPOSITION: 83% Cabernet Sauvignon 13% Merlot 2% Cabernet Franc 1% Petit Verdot 1% Malbec AGING: 14 months in 100% small French and American oak barrels; 25% new TOTAL ACIDITY: 5.8 g/L PH: 3.77 ALCOHOL: 13.5%

The warm harvest allowed grapes to reach full maturity, yielding a very well-balanced, generous vintage. The 2012 summer was a great growing season for red varietals, with daytime temperatures of 88-90°F. Simi Vineyards has enjoyed a rich history in California wine making. One of the first wineries to rebound after prohibition and since then has lead the charge in making classic Alexander Valley Cabs among other prime selections. The first American client of famous French Enologist Michel Rolland, current winemaker Steve Reeder has won consistent accolades throughout the industry including making a Wine Spectator #1 Wine of the Year when he worked at Chateau St. Jean. Simi owns 600 acres of estate vineyards in Alexander Valley including the Landslide vineyard, and so Reeder has access to the best fruit in the region. 2012 was an outstanding vintage throughout California and this wine shows it. A blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot, 1% Cabernet Franc, & 1% Malbec aged 16 months in 100% small oak barrels; 24% new French oak, 10% new American oak. It shows bright cherry, blackberry, plum, and cassis seasoned with baking spice, cedar, and chocolate notes. Full-bodied yet silky with supple tannis and a long finish. A classy wine that’s a stalwart of Sonoma County, showing real pedigree and at a great price.
