Simi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 1995

Member Review by Mike Pobega:

Dark blackish edges with just the slightest sign of age. The nose began as as habit to say 'old wine', which anyone who knows me, knows I’m not thrilled. But then this did an amazing transformation within 30 minutes. It was super pure and elegant and a truly memorable bottle of 14 year old cab.Admirable amounts of fruits: black currants, black cherry cola with some kirsch royal and a touch of crème de cassis. There was a touch of cedar, and tobacco notes with some tat and soy. Everything was hitting at all the right levels. A 45 second finish. Glad we did not judge this on first impressions. 93/100

A lot of what we do at Simi is based on tradition, enhanced with cutting-edge innovation. Our philosophy has always been to maintain the quality and style that we're recognized for, while at the same time improve our methods for growing grapes and crafting wines to reflect the experience and knowledge we are accumulating and have been throughout the winery's 125-year history. Long ago we also realized the importance of Alexander Valley and knew that it would be a leading appellation for growing Bordeaux varietals. Today we showcase the region with our Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot as well as our vineyard-designated Landslide Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1989 we purchased our Russian River Valley Goldfields Vineyard and planted it to hand-selected original cuttings from some of the best and oldest vineyards in California. This innovative technique gives us the amazing diversity of flavors that has made Simi's Russian River Reserve Chardonnay famous. Simi's unique vineyards are the genesis of our distinct wines. Our warm Alexander Valley Estate Vineyards are planted primarily to red Bordeaux varietals and are the source of Simi's Cabernet Sauvignon. These vineyards encompass nearly 600 acres and possess some of the most diverse soils of any wine-growing region, resulting from eons of geologic activity including a catastrophic landslide which changed the course of the Russian River. Complementing the Alexander Valley Vineyards, Simi's 120-acre Goldfields Vineyard in the Russian River Valley is the backbone of the Simi Chardonnay. Planted with a wide array of clones and field selections, Goldfields Vineyard is one of the most diverse vineyards in the Russian River Valley and all of California. With every taste of Simi wines you'll discover our devotion to tradition that is enhanced by our pursuit of the best vineyards, the best grape-growing methods, and the best winemaking techniques. Fantastic vibrant color. No sign of a 12 year old showing, not even on the edges. The nose shows is pure black currant and cassis. The palate reveals a super lush character with slightly sweet tannins, great dark fruit, some tar and leather. A great acid level that would make this great on my table with a grilled steak and frites. (soon). The finish is very long and smooth. I traded a 2003 Pride Cab Reserve for three of these and I think I did ok. :)92/100

...among the more forward opulently-styled 1995s. This attractive wine which has the potential to be outstanding exhibits a deep ruby/purple color and a friendly open-knit spicy sweet blackcurrant nose that borders on jamminess. Pure with a multi-layered texture excellent concentration sweet plush fat fruit decent acidity and a long lusty finish this Cabernet is reminiscent of a deep rich right bank Bordeaux made primarily from Merlot rather than Cabernet Sauvignon... ...Raspberry mint and fresh herbs on the nose; showed a slight dill note with aeration. Supple and lush with intriguing hints of charred meat smoke and leather to go with the currant and raspberry flavors. Rather stylish wine with satisfying sweetness and a layered texture like right-bank Bordeaux. Quite ripe for 95 but with plenty of underlying structure. Stephen Tanzers IWC.

A stunning wine with deep black-cherry plum and blackberry fruit. There are hints of licorice and chocolate in the center and the fruit grows more intense. The finish is long and elegant with layers of flavors. Wine Enthusiast.

Remarkably complex and concentrated, with a dark, plush, focused core of ripe plum, black cherry, blackberry and spice. Turns rich on the long finish. Best from 2000 through 2008. 4,100 cases made. -JL Wine Spectator. A Cabernet Sauvignon wine from California in USA. 1995 Simi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County Reserve 750ml
