Simi Sonoma County Zinfandel 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

Wine Tasting Notes Sonoma County is home to some of the best Zinfandel vineyards in California. In the winery, traditional winemaking techniques such as open-top fermentation and gentle extraction yield a deeply colored Zinfandel. It is delicious with barbecued meats, pasta with red sauces, aged cheese and spicy gumbo. Ruby red with slight purple cast. Brambly raspberry, red cherry dusted with baking spices, black pepper and cocoa. Fresh upfront berry fruit laced with vanilla; light toast on the finish.

A lot of what we do at Simi is based on tradition, enhanced with cutting-edge innovation. Our philosophy has always been to maintain the quality and style that we're recognized for, while at the same time improve our methods for growing grapes and crafting wines to reflect the experience and knowledge we are accumulating and have been throughout the winery's 125-year history. Long ago we also realized the importance of Alexander Valley and knew that it would be a leading appellation for growing Bordeaux varietals. Today we showcase the region with our Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot as well as our vineyard-designated Landslide Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1989 we purchased our Russian River Valley Goldfields Vineyard and planted it to hand-selected original cuttings from some of the best and oldest vineyards in California. This innovative technique gives us the amazing diversity of flavors that has made Simi's Russian River Reserve Chardonnay famous. Simi's unique vineyards are the genesis of our distinct wines. Our warm Alexander Valley Estate Vineyards are planted primarily to red Bordeaux varietals and are the source of Simi's Cabernet Sauvignon. These vineyards encompass nearly 600 acres and possess some of the most diverse soils of any wine-growing region, resulting from eons of geologic activity including a catastrophic landslide which changed the course of the Russian River. Complementing the Alexander Valley Vineyards, Simi's 120-acre Goldfields Vineyard in the Russian River Valley is the backbone of the Simi Chardonnay. Planted with a wide array of clones and field selections, Goldfields Vineyard is one of the most diverse vineyards in the Russian River Valley and all of California. With every taste of Simi wines you'll discover our devotion to tradition that is enhanced by our pursuit of the best vineyards, the best grape-growing methods, and the best winemaking techniques. Tried this in a blind taste test. Did not fare well. Hints of apples, lemon, and lots of oak. Some spiceness. Almost a cinnamon flavor. The fruit was under ripe. Dissapointing given the price. I have had bad luck with 07chardonays from california this year. Generally I like california chardonays. I'm conncerned with california wines this year. Rising prices, diminished quality. Look for better values in chile and argentina. Maybe next year will be better.

Simi is one of California's oldest wineries. Their Chardonnay is a rich wine with hints of vanilla on the nose backed up by loads of ripe fruit.

Rich, creamy and full-bodied, showing fig, melon, spice and green apple flavors that have lively acidity, with a long, clean finish. Drink now through 2012.

Achieves the alchemy of well-toasted oak and perfectly ripe fruit to produce this luscious, creamy Chardonnay. Mangoes, papayas, pineapple custard, caramel, vanilla, itrsquo;s all there, along with crisp, balancing acidity.

Much better than the wineryrsquo;s regular rsquo;06 Sonoma County bottling, which was released a year ago. This wine is mellowing with bottle age, showing softly decadent flavors of grilled pineapples, buttered toast and smoky oak. Easy to find, with 17,500 cases produced.

This shares a family resemblance to Simirsquo;s 2003 Sonoma County Chardonnay, both finishing with a white cornmeal flavor of toasted lees (perhaps from a higher proportion of lots fermented with native yeasts). In the reserve, you get substantially more elegance, and a gentle delivery of finely ripened fruit. It tastes of white peach, golden delicious apple and camomile, the fruit integrated into the oak, lasting along with that leesy tone. Zelma Long set the standard for Simi Reserve in the eighties and nineties, now taking impressive new directions under winemaker Nick Goldschmidt.

Tasting Notes:

Weighty and viscous on the palate, the wine explodes with aromas and flavors of ripe pear, juicy white peach and toasty oak spice. Fresh, yet richly textured, this Chardonnay captures the brilliance of Alexander Valley fruit.
