A lot of what we do at Simi is based on tradition, enhanced with cutting-edge innovation. Our philosophy has always been to maintain the quality and style that we're recognized for, while at the same time improve our methods for growing grapes and crafting wines to reflect the experience and knowledge we are accumulating and have been throughout the winery's 125-year history. Long ago we also realized the importance of Alexander Valley and knew that it would be a leading appellation for growing Bordeaux varietals. Today we showcase the region with our Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot as well as our vineyard-designated Landslide Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1989 we purchased our Russian River Valley Goldfields Vineyard and planted it to hand-selected original cuttings from some of the best and oldest vineyards in California. This innovative technique gives us the amazing diversity of flavors that has made Simi's Russian River Reserve Chardonnay famous. Simi's unique vineyards are the genesis of our distinct wines. Our warm Alexander Valley Estate Vineyards are planted primarily to red Bordeaux varietals and are the source of Simi's Cabernet Sauvignon. These vineyards encompass nearly 600 acres and possess some of the most diverse soils of any wine-growing region, resulting from eons of geologic activity including a catastrophic landslide which changed the course of the Russian River. Complementing the Alexander Valley Vineyards, Simi's 120-acre Goldfields Vineyard in the Russian River Valley is the backbone of the Simi Chardonnay. Planted with a wide array of clones and field selections, Goldfields Vineyard is one of the most diverse vineyards in the Russian River Valley and all of California. With every taste of Simi wines you'll discover our devotion to tradition that is enhanced by our pursuit of the best vineyards, the best grape-growing methods, and the best winemaking techniques. Quite pale color. Herbal, grassy nose. Fortunately, that herbalness and grassiness is very much diminished in the mouth. Very pleasant lime tartness on the palate--not quite as tart as most NZ SBs, but significant presence. Back label indicates grapes are sourced from Alexander, Knight's and Russian River Valleys. US$9.99 at Total Wine last Feb.

Sharp green apple and fennel; good acidity. Excellent example of what I love about Sonoma Sauv Blancs and at a great value.

Characteristic of the Sauvignon Blanc grape, the rich fruit of this wine is balanced by a subtle hint of grass, creating a fine crispness with a satisfying finish.

Medium straw. Medium-bodied. Balanced acidity. Moderately extracted. White peach, apples. Reserved, perfumed aromas reveal orchard fruit flavors, with some alcohol warmth and dryness coming through on the finish.

What a nice Sauvignon Blanc. It's bone dry and zesty in acidity, with lemon and lime, grapefruit, vanilla and spice flavors that have a touch of savory gooseberry. Great cocktail wine.

A classic white wine, crisp, dry, pale and brilliant. Made with fruit from their favorite Sonoma County vineyards, and blended with just 9% Sèmillon for a round, spicy note in the mouth and finish. Only 14% of the wine was barrel fermented this time, to preserve the purity of the rich fruit flavors. All the wine was aged in older French oak and stirred on its lees to promote the silky texture that feels so good in your mouth. Taste the layers of citrus, melon and pear, and outstanding fruit and acid balance.

Easy and tasty, this is a nice everyday wine, with citrus, vanilla and grass flavors, a tangy bite of acid, and a dry, lemon-and-lime finish.
