Simi Chardonnay Sonoma 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

The remarkable color of this wine cannot be ignored. It is brilliantly clear straw with shades of gold throughout. The nose is similarly expressive, with bright nectarine, peach, apple, orange blossoms, and delicate spices along with hints of smoky toasted oak. It all comes together on the palate with well-defined, supremely balanced and forward flavors of tangerine, peach, and green apple that are lifted by a warm, toasty oak character best described as sweet vanilla mingled with hazelnut, nutmeg, and smoky bacon. This Chardonnay finishes with a delicate and light floral touch.

A lot of what we do at Simi is based on tradition, enhanced with cutting-edge innovation. Our philosophy has always been to maintain the quality and style that we're recognized for, while at the same time improve our methods for growing grapes and crafting wines to reflect the experience and knowledge we are accumulating and have been throughout the winery's 125-year history. Long ago we also realized the importance of Alexander Valley and knew that it would be a leading appellation for growing Bordeaux varietals. Today we showcase the region with our Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot as well as our vineyard-designated Landslide Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1989 we purchased our Russian River Valley Goldfields Vineyard and planted it to hand-selected original cuttings from some of the best and oldest vineyards in California. This innovative technique gives us the amazing diversity of flavors that has made Simi's Russian River Reserve Chardonnay famous. Simi's unique vineyards are the genesis of our distinct wines. Our warm Alexander Valley Estate Vineyards are planted primarily to red Bordeaux varietals and are the source of Simi's Cabernet Sauvignon. These vineyards encompass nearly 600 acres and possess some of the most diverse soils of any wine-growing region, resulting from eons of geologic activity including a catastrophic landslide which changed the course of the Russian River. Complementing the Alexander Valley Vineyards, Simi's 120-acre Goldfields Vineyard in the Russian River Valley is the backbone of the Simi Chardonnay. Planted with a wide array of clones and field selections, Goldfields Vineyard is one of the most diverse vineyards in the Russian River Valley and all of California. With every taste of Simi wines you'll discover our devotion to tradition that is enhanced by our pursuit of the best vineyards, the best grape-growing methods, and the best winemaking techniques. Our 2009 Russian River Valley Reserve Chardonnay, medium straw in color with an alluring golden edge, offers forward fruit with minerality that is lifted and framed by sweet oak notes and spice. On the nose, look for toasted brioche, honey, smoky notes, lemon curd, grilled pineapple, lychee fruit, green apple, pear, apricot, and a subtle perfume of honey and orange blossom. Flavors lead with a focused entry of vibrant fresh fruit: green apple, peach, and pear with a structured finish of zesty citrus and juicy pineapple-all of which are tied together with mineral notes. Stunning when paired with New England clam chowder, roast chicken with root vegetables, or grilled salmon with risotto. - Winery

There's lots of oak on top of a somewhat thin wine, but it's pleasant enough, with modest pineapple and peach flavors and dusty spices. Finishes quick, with oak flavors.

Broad leesiness and toasty oak give this a smoky bacon scent. Itrsquo;s supple and warm, a white to chill for a grilled pork chop.
