Simi Chardonnay Russian River 2007
Tried this in a blind taste test. Did not fare well. Hints of apples, lemon, and lots of oak. Some spiceness. Almost a cinnamon flavor. The fruit was under ripe. Dissapointing given the price. I have had bad luck with 07chardonays from california this year. Generally I like california chardonays. I'm conncerned with california wines this year. Rising prices, diminished quality. Look for better values in chile and argentina. Maybe next year will be better.

Textbook RRV Chard, with its bright, clean acids and savory flavors of ripe apples, pears and minerals, and dusty spices. All of this is well oaked, but the vanilla and char fit in just fine. The creamy texture adds allure.
Vibrant and nervy on the palate, displaying an intricate balance of warm and cool fruit flavors, distinctive mineral notes and layers of integrated oak. Its flavors reflect the diversity of grapevine selections planted in the Goldfields Vineyard.
A rich, smooth, elegant style, with creamy oak wrapped an intense, tasty core of earthy pear, spice, citrus and a touch of honey. Gains complexity and depth on a long, lingering finish.
Refreshingly elegant and lively, with vibrant pear, apple, citrus and melon notes. Solid structure, with a nice dash of cedary oak, it finishes with a complex aftertaste. Drink now through 2008.
Winemaker's Notes:The Russian River Valley's cool climate plays a key role in Simi's Burgundian-style Chardonnay. The influence of the Pacific Ocean gives the Russian River Valley an extended, moderate growing season. Perfectly situated within the heart of the Russian River Valley, Simi's Goldfields vineyard is close enough to the coast to receive the benefits of the cool fog and inland enough to ensure the vineyard will get the degree days that Chardonnay grapes require to ripen to perfection.
Like most Chards these days, this wine is boldly flavored, oaky and rich. But it goes beyond the tropical fruits, vanilla and buttercream to achieve real finesse and elegance. The crisp acidity helps make it balanced.
