This is only the second release of this vineyard-designated Cabernet from Simi's 170-acre vineyard in Alexander Valley. The site comprises numerous soil types and microclimates created by an ancient volcanic landslide from nearby Mount St. Helena. Winemaker Steve Reeder blended Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec for the cuvée.

A delicious Cabernet at a terrific price. Smooth, rich and juicy, with tiers of lively black cherry, wild berry and blackberry fruit that are deeply concentrated with a supple, elegant mouthfeel. On the finish the tannins show some grip and a nice dusty, cedary oak quality adds a note of complexity. Best from 2005 through 2011.

With its Landslide bottling, Simi brings to the table an important, affordable single-vineyard Cabernet. It typically shows a beautiful balance of sweet, ripe fruit and firm tannins, backed by crisp acidity, and is big enough to handle considerable oak. Young and juicy, it's delicious now, and should develop through 2012.

This fabulously complex wine shows how you can merge power and nuance with the most complex and satisfying results. Cherries, dried herbs, vanilla and toasty oak, with ripe, lush tannins and great balance. Shows an exciting finesse throughout. Hard to exaggerate the quality. A perfect companion at the table.

This bottling has been a star for Simi since its inception, and the '05 is among their best ever. It shows Alexander Valley's softness and slight herbaceousness, along with decadently rich red currant, mocha and oak flavors. Classic and elegant now, it should develop bottle complexities for the next six years. This is a good price, especially compared to what's going on in Napa Valley. Editor's Choice.

Wine Tasting Notes86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot, 1% Malbec.Deep ruby in color with red highlights. Aromas of concentrated black cherry, plum, and blueberry are spiced with cedar, clove and vanilla. You will enjoy blackberry and cherry flavors that are accented with cocoa and spice, giving layers and depth to the wine. Concentrated on the palate with ripe tannins that give full and lasting intensity.

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2004 vintage is the fifth release of this vineyard-designated Cabernet Sauvignon from the Simi winery's Landslide Vineyard in southern Alexander Valley, which was first planted in 1985. The Landslide Vineyard-170 acres divided by forces of nature into three distinct sections and elevations-produces wines that reflect the extraordinary diversity of the vineyard and its dramatic geologic history. The Landslide Vineyard is comprised of numerous soil types and microclimates created by an ancient volcanic landslide from nearby Mount St. Helena. These soil variations, combined with diverse topography, result in varied bud break, flowering, veraison and harvest times in the vineyard blocks. Along with the complexity created by the different soil types and topography, Simi has planted an assortment of varieties and clones. Nine different clones of Cabernet Sauvignon, along with plantings of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec give winemaker Steve Reeder and his team the tools needed to create spectacular blends of the "big five" Bordeaux varietals.
