Simi Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley Landslide 2004

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2004 vintage is the fifth release of this vineyard-designated Cabernet Sauvignon from the Simi winery's Landslide Vineyard in southern Alexander Valley, which was first planted in 1985. The Landslide Vineyard-170 acres divided by forces of nature into three distinct sections and elevations-produces wines that reflect the extraordinary diversity of the vineyard and its dramatic geologic history. The Landslide Vineyard is comprised of numerous soil types and microclimates created by an ancient volcanic landslide from nearby Mount St. Helena. These soil variations, combined with diverse topography, result in varied bud break, flowering, veraison and harvest times in the vineyard blocks. Along with the complexity created by the different soil types and topography, Simi has planted an assortment of varieties and clones. Nine different clones of Cabernet Sauvignon, along with plantings of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec give winemaker Steve Reeder and his team the tools needed to create spectacular blends of the "big five" Bordeaux varietals.

A lot of what we do at Simi is based on tradition, enhanced with cutting-edge innovation. Our philosophy has always been to maintain the quality and style that we're recognized for, while at the same time improve our methods for growing grapes and crafting wines to reflect the experience and knowledge we are accumulating and have been throughout the winery's 125-year history. Long ago we also realized the importance of Alexander Valley and knew that it would be a leading appellation for growing Bordeaux varietals. Today we showcase the region with our Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot as well as our vineyard-designated Landslide Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1989 we purchased our Russian River Valley Goldfields Vineyard and planted it to hand-selected original cuttings from some of the best and oldest vineyards in California. This innovative technique gives us the amazing diversity of flavors that has made Simi's Russian River Reserve Chardonnay famous. Simi's unique vineyards are the genesis of our distinct wines. Our warm Alexander Valley Estate Vineyards are planted primarily to red Bordeaux varietals and are the source of Simi's Cabernet Sauvignon. These vineyards encompass nearly 600 acres and possess some of the most diverse soils of any wine-growing region, resulting from eons of geologic activity including a catastrophic landslide which changed the course of the Russian River. Complementing the Alexander Valley Vineyards, Simi's 120-acre Goldfields Vineyard in the Russian River Valley is the backbone of the Simi Chardonnay. Planted with a wide array of clones and field selections, Goldfields Vineyard is one of the most diverse vineyards in the Russian River Valley and all of California. With every taste of Simi wines you'll discover our devotion to tradition that is enhanced by our pursuit of the best vineyards, the best grape-growing methods, and the best winemaking techniques. From a benchland vineyard in the southern end of Alexander Valley, this is sleek and black. Its dark cherry flavor gives way to scents of kirsch and full, ripe tannins. For now, those tannins last longer than the fruit; already juicy, the firmness of the structure suggests five years' aging will build more depth and complexity.

Toasty and generous on the nose, with rich, elegant black cherry fruit and finely integrated tannins on the long finish.

Dense and tannic, with lots of black currant and cherry flavors and elaborate oak. Acids and tannins help it to achieve a certain complexity. Notable for its smooth structure. It's best consumed soon, with a good steak.

A delicious Cabernet at a terrific price. Smooth, rich and juicy, with tiers of lively black cherry, wild berry and blackberry fruit that are deeply concentrated with a supple, elegant mouthfeel. On the finish the tannins show some grip and a nice dusty, cedary oak quality adds a note of complexity. Best from 2005 through 2011.

Tasting Notes:

Deep ruby in color with red highlights. Aromas of concentrated black cherry, plum, and blueberry are spiced with cedar, clove and vanilla. You will enjoy blackberry and cherry flavors that are accented with cocoa and spice, giving layers and depth to the wine. Concentrated on the palate with ripe tannins that give full and lasting intensity.
