This 100% Cabernet shows its pedigree in the refinement of its tannins and dryness, despite lush blackberry and cherry, currant, plum and oak flavors. It’s not really drinkable now because the tannins are so strong, locking the mouth down in puckery astringency. Will it age? The outcome is unclear, but the fruit doesn’t seem intense enough to outlast the tannins.
On land that has supported vines since the 1880s, our vineyard was the third property planted to Cabernet Sauvignon in what became the Stags Leap District. SOLO is produced entirely from grapes grown in this vineyard.

Deep, bright ruby-red. Pungent oak and mint lift aromas of blackberry, cassis, medicinal black cherry, licorice, menthol and wild herbs. Densely packed and juicy, showing a distinctly tighter grain and a more youthfully imploded character than the Napa Valley cabernet, with intense cassis and spice flavors complicated by herbs and tobacco leaf. Finishes subtle and persistent, with firm tannins and an element of delicacy. There’s more ahead for this wine: I’d hold it for four or five years.
