VINTAGE NOTES: Textbook conditions saw near-ideal spring bud-break, steady flowering, even fruit set, and a lengthy stretch of warm days and cool and often foggy nights during the long summer months. Late and light rains held off until grapes found optimal ripeness, bringing exceptional quality with a smooth balance of acids and sugars. WINEMAKING NOTES: The wine was drained and pressed off the skins after 16 days. Completing malolactic fermentation in the barrel, the wine was then racked and placed back in the barrel to age for 17 months. Oak profile during aging, 100% French oak. 46% of the oak was new French. VARIETAL COMPOSITION: 95% Merlot 5% Cabernet Sauvignon Alcohol: 14.6% T.A.: 5.23 g/L PH: 3.58

VINTAGE NOTES: What began with a wet winter and spring continued with rainfall into mid-June that delayed bloom and disrupted fruit set resulting in shatter in parts of the region set the stage for a long, cooler-than-average growing season with a later-than-average harvest beset with early October rain storms. This timetable continued through the somewhat cool summer season. Few high heat events occurred at any point this year, vine canopies were opened up to ensure sunlight, warmth and good air circulation around the grape clusters. WINEMAKING NOTES: The wine was drained and pressed off the skins after 12 days. Completing malolactic fermentation in the barrel, the wine was then racked and placed back in the barrel to age for 16 months. Oak profile during aging, 98% French oak and 2% American oak, 52% of the oak was new French. TASTING NOTES: Our Merlot vines are rooted in the foothills of an ancient volcano, Mt. George. These rocky slopes are in a climate sweet spot: close enough to the cool San Pablo Bay to give the wine aromas of rosemary and mint, warm enough to bring out flavors of blackberry and spice. TASTING NOTES: Wet stone minerality, bright cherry fruit and notes of rosemary and mint on the nose set the expectation of complexity which this Merlot delivers. On the palate it is loaded with fruit, blackberries, cherries and plums enhanced by an herbal quality. Hints of spice and cocoa, coming from the barrel, are also present. These lush layers of flavor are held together in a structure of fine tannins, giving a smooth texture which extends through the long, pleasing finish. VINTAGE NOTES: Rainfall returned after three dry years, pushed bud break, flowering and fruit-set back by at least two weeks at the front end of the growing season, and due to the cloud cover, there was no frost damage in 2010. The summer brought cooler than normal temperatures, where constant vigilance and rigorous canopy management averted mildew or pest problems. The ten-day to two-week lag continued into a later than average veraison. A two-day heat spike into triple digits for the first time this season occurred in late August, with canopies thinned to adjust for the cooler season, grapes at various sites experienced some sunburn. The damage was variable site-to-site. Sorting the grapes at harvest allowed us to remove any less-than-optimal clusters. Cooler than average temperatures returned again in early September, but gave way to warmer temperatures bringing good flavor and color development across the board. WINEMAKING NOTES: The grapes were harvested at an average brix of 25.9◦. The wine was drained and pressed off the skins after 18 days. Completing malolactic fermentation in the barrel, the wine was then racked and placed back in the barrel to age for 17 months.
