The Stags Leap District is one of the smallest, yet most renowned, wine growing regions in Napa Valley. Here, Silverado Vineyards has been quietly producing world-class wines from their state-of-the-art winery for over 20 years. With grapes sourced almost entirely from Silverado’s family-owned estate vineyards, these hand-crafted wines are created in small lots with extreme care. They express richness, elegance and age-worthiness. Silverado wines are unique - one-of-a-kind blends of location, philosophy and winemaking style. The Mediterranean-style stone winery, established in 1981, stands on a knoll above the Silverado Trail in the heart of the Stags Leap District. This dark purple wine has explosive aromas of jammy fruit including plum, cherry and currant followed by some hints of tobacco and smokey oak. On the palate, this full-bodied cabernet opens with wonderful black fruit flavors of blackberries and black cherries with some black tea and pepper in the middle and some licorice on the back. The oak was subtle and the tannins were rather soft for such a big and young Cabernet.

The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon is a gorgeous example of elegance allied to power. The final blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc offers up notes of crushed rock, spring flowers, red and black currants, and plum as well as hints of white chocolate and subtle barrique smells. Medium to full-bodied, with a nicely layered mouthfeel that builds incrementally, the wine has superb purity as well as accessability. It can be drunk now or cellared for 15 or more years.

Bright, saturated red-ruby. Aromas of black fruits, menthol, coffee and mocha. Then surprisingly sweet, supple and seamless, with enticing dark fruits and spicy oak spreading over the palate. Broad and creamy; seems distinctly more pliant and graceful than the Limited bottling. Finishes with toothcoating tannins and very good breadth.

Forward aromas of cocoa, cassis and bay leaf. Full and rich black cherry and plum fruit meet spice and sweet oak on the palate. Superb balance continues through a persistent finish.

This gentle, rich red has slightly volatile aromatics of peppermint over candied red fruit, a parallel to plum sauce for Hoisin beef.

The elegant 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa (87% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc) reveals notions of lead pencil shavings intermixed with black cherries, black currants, toast, and damp earth. It is a mid-weight, flavorful red with good acidity as well as a moderately long finish. It should keep for 7ndash;10 years.

This is a wine of pedigree. It shows in the exquisite acids and tannins and overall balance of its parts, including oak. The flavors are classic blackcurrants and cassis, with a nice edge of dried herbs. Not a blockbuster, it's probably best now.

Intense dark ripe red fruit aromas with dried herb and spice leads to a broadly structured palate with layers of berry fruit compote, bittersweet chocolate and vanilla.
