Silver Oak Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

A seamless wine that expresses bright, fresh fruit characters from an unusually cool California vintage. It has a vibrant, ruby color and a complex nose of boysenberries, blueberries, sage, licorice and roasted chicory. It has a luscious mouthfeel with notes of fresh fruit and carnation flowers on the palate. It has fine-grained tannins and a velvety texture that leads to a long, fruit-filled finish. Given proper cellaring, this wine should give drinking pleasure through 2031.

We pride ourselves on making one varietal that is food-friendly and deliciously drinkable upon release. Our story begins in the early 1970’s when Ray Duncan befriended winegrower Justin Meyer. The two formed a partnership and co-founded Silver Oak Cellars in 1972 with the bold vision of producing only Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, under the leadership of Ray’s sons David and Tim and Director of Winemaking Daniel Baron, we produce two wines: our Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Silver Oak’s unwavering focus on making exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon enables us to continually improve and refine our craft. Each of our two estates – one in Napa Valley and the other in Alexander Valley – is dedicated to producing a single wine. These two Cabernet Sauvignons consistently reflect the very best of their appellations. Our estate vineyards are ideally situated to provide optimal growing conditions for our Cabernet Sauvignon. We also work closely with top independent growers throughout the Napa and Alexander Valleys to ensure a reliable source of excellent fruit. We complement this fruit with grapes from top independent growers throughout both appellations, giving our winemaking team the flexibility they need to realize the full potential of each Silver Oak vintage. Tasting Room Tasting rooms at both of our estates are open Monday – Saturday, 9am – 5pm and Sundays from 11 am to 5 pm.  We are closed  some holidays. Read less

Silver Oak is the standard bearer for Napa Valley Cab and has been for decades. for this, their Napa Valley bottling they source grapes from throughout Napa Valley. The exceptional and cool 2010 vintage offered an array of well developed fruit with long hangtime, complex flavors and good balanced acidity. A blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc. Silver Oak takes two unique steps in their wine making process that make this wine different and exceptional every vintage. First, they blend the different vineyard lots before the wine goes into barrels for aging. This lets the fruit expression stand out with the natural elements coming into balance before the influence of oak. Then the wine is transferred to 100% new American oak barrels for 24 months of aging. The second unique step they take is after bottling they age the wine in bottle for a full 20 months allowing the flavors to fully integrate and the tannins to soften so upon release it's nicely developed and clear to see the path it will take to maturity. And this 2010 shows immense complexity and bold fruit flavors. Black cherry, black currant, cranberry and plums open to dark chocolate, mocha, licorice and wood smoke as it moves through the mid-palate. Ripe tannins kick up on the finish suggesting excellent longevity, but the luscious fruit flavors linger delightfully. By all accounts this is a Silver Oak they'll be talking about for many years to come. You won't want to miss it!

Wine Spectator scored this 2010 92 points saying "Shows a good touch of bottle age and a notably oaky presence, marked by dill, vanilla bean and coconut notes wrapped around a rich, authoritative, full-bodied core of loamy earth, dark berry, licorice and espresso. Drink now through 2028."
