Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2014

External Review by We Speak Wine:

TASTING NOTES: Our 2013 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is dark ruby in color and entices you with a nose of raspberry, cassis and loose pipe tobacco. This full-bodied wine has an assertively silky structure and is notably spicy on the palate. Flavors of sage and blackberry mark the wine’s entry. The strong acidity in the mid-palate is followed by a lingering finish. Given proper cellaring, this wine will provide drinking pleasure through 2038. BLENDING AND AGING: Our 2013 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is comprised of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. It was blended in early 2014 and aged for 24 months in 85% new American oak and 15% one-used American oak barrels from our Missouri cooperage, The Oak. Early blending assures a balanced core and allows all components to achieve a seamless harmony during barrel aging. It was then aged for an additional 20 months in bottle before being released in February of 2018. VINTAGE DESCRIPTION: The Napa Valley saw just 20 inches of rain during the winter months leading up to the 2013 growing season; any meaningful precipitation ceased in December of 2012. The lack of rain and a relatively warm spring led to an early start to the growing season. Summer was remarkably mild. During critical ripening, air temperatures remained stable, creating a long, slow harvest. The seasonal trifecta of moderate temperatures, low soil moisture and little precipitation led to a vintage that will be remembered for its structured and concentrated wines. Harvest started on September 2nd and on October 4th the last of the Cabernet Sauvignon was rolling into the winery. Composition: 79% Cabernet Sauvignon 15% Merlot 3% Cabernet Franc 3% Petit Verdot Alcohol: 14.1% ** Only 6 in Stock **

We pride ourselves on making one varietal that is food-friendly and deliciously drinkable upon release. Our story begins in the early 1970’s when Ray Duncan befriended winegrower Justin Meyer. The two formed a partnership and co-founded Silver Oak Cellars in 1972 with the bold vision of producing only Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, under the leadership of Ray’s sons David and Tim and Director of Winemaking Daniel Baron, we produce two wines: our Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Silver Oak’s unwavering focus on making exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon enables us to continually improve and refine our craft. Each of our two estates – one in Napa Valley and the other in Alexander Valley – is dedicated to producing a single wine. These two Cabernet Sauvignons consistently reflect the very best of their appellations. Our estate vineyards are ideally situated to provide optimal growing conditions for our Cabernet Sauvignon. We also work closely with top independent growers throughout the Napa and Alexander Valleys to ensure a reliable source of excellent fruit. We complement this fruit with grapes from top independent growers throughout both appellations, giving our winemaking team the flexibility they need to realize the full potential of each Silver Oak vintage. Tasting Room Tasting rooms at both of our estates are open Monday – Saturday, 9am – 5pm and Sundays from 11 am to 5 pm.  We are closed  some holidays. Read less

Not bad at all but not complex. Seemed younger than the label indicated as it was lacking body and nose.

While I throughly believe that the Silver Oak Alexander Valley is very overrated, this is one of the best wines I have ever had. Blueberry pie on the nose that I would rather smell than eat any dessert. Beautiful wine.

Definitely one of the best wines I've had, and in my opinion, as good as the 2001.

Much better than the 2000. Not my style but: Big, jammy, cherries that turn into plums, oaky,a moment of magic, silky, velvet, and sufficient finish. Decant and drink now... while the fruit is fresh.

Excellent, well structured cab, but Silver Oak cabs in general are made to taste better after lying down for years. Taste too early and the tannins ruin the velvety, full-mouth-feel I love so much with other expensive cabs, such as high-quality Stags Leap appelation cabs.

Vintage: 2012 11/22/2017

TASTING NOTES: Our 2012 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon artfully combines the classic elegance of the old world and the ripe fruit of California. It displays an opaque garnet color with a bouquet driven by fruity aromas of blackberry liqueur and hoisin sauce. It also offers the savory components of sage and molasses. These complex aromatics are complemented by sandalwood and nutmeg characteristics indicative of American oak aging. This is a well-structured wine with a compact and rich mid-palate buttressed by silky tannins and generous acidity. Given proper cellaring, this wine will provide drinking pleasure through 2037. VINTAGE DESCRIPTION: The 2012 vintage was broadly described as being an exceptional growing season and a gift from Mother Nature. Not only were we excited about the great growing conditions, but also the innovative vineyard techniques like berry sensory analysis and precision farming we implemented in our vineyards. The dry winter was the beginning of the extended drought period in California, but well-timed rainfall in February and March, as well as two inches in mid-April, filled the soil profile before the coming season. Budbreak was even and bloom progressed quickly, leading to clusters with both high quality and high quantity potential. The summer weather was wonderfully cooperative, with only a single day’s high above 100˚F from May through the end of September before a short heat event on October 1st and 2nd. We began harvest on September 11th and concluded on October 19th, after which an inch of much-needed rain fell on October 23rd. Composition: 80% Cabernet Sauvignon 10% Merlot 7% Cabernet Franc 3% Petit Verdot Alcohol: 14.4% ** Only 4 in Stock **
