Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 6 Pack 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2008 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a dark, rich full-bodied wine with great tannic structure and mouth-feel. It has a garnet color and a nose of ripe boysenberries, cherry liqueur, dark chocolate, sandalwood and a hint of roasting meat. On the palate, it is mouth-coating and incredibly rich in umami. It has a very long, savory finish with the slight grip of fine-grained tannins. Given proper cellaring, this wine should give drinking pleasure through 2030. Alcohol 13.9%.

We pride ourselves on making one varietal that is food-friendly and deliciously drinkable upon release. Our story begins in the early 1970’s when Ray Duncan befriended winegrower Justin Meyer. The two formed a partnership and co-founded Silver Oak Cellars in 1972 with the bold vision of producing only Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, under the leadership of Ray’s sons David and Tim and Director of Winemaking Daniel Baron, we produce two wines: our Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Silver Oak’s unwavering focus on making exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon enables us to continually improve and refine our craft. Each of our two estates – one in Napa Valley and the other in Alexander Valley – is dedicated to producing a single wine. These two Cabernet Sauvignons consistently reflect the very best of their appellations. Our estate vineyards are ideally situated to provide optimal growing conditions for our Cabernet Sauvignon. We also work closely with top independent growers throughout the Napa and Alexander Valleys to ensure a reliable source of excellent fruit. We complement this fruit with grapes from top independent growers throughout both appellations, giving our winemaking team the flexibility they need to realize the full potential of each Silver Oak vintage. Tasting Room Tasting rooms at both of our estates are open Monday – Saturday, 9am – 5pm and Sundays from 11 am to 5 pm.  We are closed  some holidays. Read less

Classic aromas of light dill, and even oregano, enmeshed in slightly charry Marshmallow vanilla oak. Under that blanket there are balanced and promising notes of bell pepper tinged red cherry fruit. In the mouth his is smooth and velvety with a sweet, easy character and good length to the somewhat simple toasty, black cherry fruit. There's a bit of raspy tannin on the finish but nothing offensive. A solid, if small scaled, bottle of Cabernet. 87pts

The nose has rich currant and dried balckberry flovors. A rich mouthfeel of ripe blackberry and very ripe cherry. a bit hot on the finish but that quickly disapears and finishes long with saddle and leather notes.

Much improved over the '06 but still sadly over priced. Great structure and the tannins are riper in this vintage. Notes of currants and chocolate throughout. Still, there are much better Cabs out there for $60+ than this mass produced name.

Still young, this Silver Oak will mellow over time. Strong flavors of black fruit and cedar, medium tannins and long finish. I'd suggest 2014 as the best time to pop one of these babies.

Pre-Sale, order now, ships first week in August! Because Silver Oak only produces Cabernet Sauvignon from California's two best Cabernet microclimates, their wines are consistently outstanding and complex, brimming with ripe cassis flavors, carefully seasoned with toasty new oak. Because of their long relationships with growers they are able to source the best possible fruit from prime vineyards throughout Alexander Valley. This wine, from the outstanding 2012 vintage in Alexander Valley is a blend of 98% Cabernet Sauvignon and just 2% Merlot. It was blended in early 2013 and aged for 24 months in 48% new and 52% once-used American oak barrels from their own cooperage, The Oak, in Higbee, Missouri. Early blending assures a balanced core and allows the components to achieve a seamless harmony during barrel aging. After bottling in the spring of 2015, the wine was aged an additional 15 months in bottle before this release coming up in August of 2016. It has a lovely garnet color and opens with aromas of black currant, orange zest and raspberry. These aromas are framed by nuanced notes of vanilla, marshmallow and cocoa, eliciting an effect reminiscent of chocolate-covered berries. The attack is rich and gives way to a mid-palate with breadth and depth, supported with refreshing acidity and integrated, dusty tannins. This wine has power with an unusual vitality and structural balance. Given proper cellar conditions, this wine will provide drinking pleasure through 2034. Grab it Now!!

Because of their long relationships with growers they are able to source the best possible fruit from prime vineyards throughout Alexander Valley. Like every vintage they age it in 100% American oak barrels for 24 months, but just 40% new oak. The Silver Oak signature of course is then aging the wine in bottle for a full 18 months before release, giving it the time it needs for the tannins to soften and the flavors to coalesce, so that when you pull the cork you can enjoy the full experience. This wine is beautifully balanced and refined. Supple, elegant and densely flavored with ripe berry and dark cocoa nuances. Don't miss it.

TASTING NOTES: Our 2011 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a harmonious and vibrant wine. This full-bodied, classic expression of Alexander Valley Cabernet in a cool vintage has a bright ruby-red color with purple undertones. The nose exudes aromas of black cherry, cedar and black olives. On the palate, its dried herb, cocoa and lavender flavors are framed by dusty tannins and a savory texture. The wine finishes with lively acidity and a lingering persistence. Given proper cellaring, this wine should give drinking pleasure through 2029. BLENDING AND AGING: Our 2011 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. It was blended in early 2012 and aged for 24 months in 40% new and 60% once-used American oak barrels. Early blending assures a balanced core and allows the components to achieve a seamless harmony during barrel aging. After bottling in the spring of 2014, the wine was aged an additional 18 months in bottle before being released in August of 2015. VINTAGE DESCRIPTION: The 2011 vintage was the second in a pair of late ripening vintages for the Alexander Valley, and one in which experience and attentive farming played an even more important role than usual. Winter and spring were wet and cool, with such conditions persisting through the bloom period, leading to lower than normal yields. These conditions persisted through the summer, pushing already delayed phenological markers later into the season. Our vineyard team used precision farming to determine the precise techniques necessary to maximize quality in each vineyard block. These included crop removal, deficit irrigation and lateral removal in order to increase light exposure and airflow. September offered a variation from the mild summer with a brief heatwave from the 6th - 7th and a sustained one from the 18th - 23rd. The application of berry sensory techniques in addition to traditional analyses positioned our team to take advantage of this window and we began harvest on September 26th. Precipitation in early October created a pause in the harvest period and we completed harvest on October 27th, approximately 2-3 weeks later than a typical vintage. Our innovative work in the vineyard resulted in a rewarding vintage; one in which a long maturation period and cooler growing conditions led to bright and vibrant flavors. Composition: 90% Cabernet Sauvignon 7% Merlot 2% Cabernet Franc 1% Petit Verdot Alcohol: 13.7%
