Silver Oak Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2001

Winemaker's Notes:

The 2001 Alexander Valley has a medium ruby-red color and a nose of blackberry jam, violets, chocolate and nutmeg. It has a rich attack, a full mid-palate and an explosion of fruit in the finish. Tannins are still evolving, so this wine will continue to improve through 2026.

We pride ourselves on making one varietal that is food-friendly and deliciously drinkable upon release. Our story begins in the early 1970’s when Ray Duncan befriended winegrower Justin Meyer. The two formed a partnership and co-founded Silver Oak Cellars in 1972 with the bold vision of producing only Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, under the leadership of Ray’s sons David and Tim and Director of Winemaking Daniel Baron, we produce two wines: our Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Silver Oak’s unwavering focus on making exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon enables us to continually improve and refine our craft. Each of our two estates – one in Napa Valley and the other in Alexander Valley – is dedicated to producing a single wine. These two Cabernet Sauvignons consistently reflect the very best of their appellations. Our estate vineyards are ideally situated to provide optimal growing conditions for our Cabernet Sauvignon. We also work closely with top independent growers throughout the Napa and Alexander Valleys to ensure a reliable source of excellent fruit. We complement this fruit with grapes from top independent growers throughout both appellations, giving our winemaking team the flexibility they need to realize the full potential of each Silver Oak vintage. Tasting Room Tasting rooms at both of our estates are open Monday – Saturday, 9am – 5pm and Sundays from 11 am to 5 pm.  We are closed  some holidays. Read less

Great color. Leather, smoke and chocolate. Great balance with huge tannins. Dark chocolate and dark cherry with long finish. Should probably have aged a bit longer.

Excellent CA cab. Silver Oak's Alexander Valley wines are 100% Cab Sauvignon which is not the case with their Napa blend. This makes the wine a bit more focused in the mouth. Although there is plenty of fruit and oak, neither are overbearing.

Very enjoyable. Perfectly made Cabernet from Cali. Well integrated flavors of cherrys & sweet red fruits. This wine is made in a traditional way, non-fruit bomb. Nice to see traditional wine comming from Cali.

Complete dust on the nose. Nose was very light for my liking. Smooth tannins, no noticeable oak, and lack of finish. I wished this to be more.

Wine Advocate ReviewRated 90The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley (by the way, all of the Alexander Valley offerings are 100% Cabernet Sauvignon) has a big, sweet, oaky nose and a seductive panoply of spices from cedarwood to plum pudding and fruitcake notes. It is a sexy, sensual, broad, flavorful Cabernet lacking serious depth, but offering attractive fruit, plenty of ripeness, and a big wallop of American oak. Drink it over the next decade.

Silver Oak is a deep, rich Cabernet Sauvignon with a garnet color and a concentrated nose of cocoa, cassis syrup, coffee, and black licorice. It is extremely full-bodied on the palate and has an incredibly long finish of black licorice and vanilla. Enjoy!
