What to Expect

Zinfandel is considered America's own great indigenous grape, even though its origins lie on the Adriatic coast. Planted throughout California and the Pacific Northwest, Zinfandel is at its best in warm regions with cooler temperatures during harvest. The wines can range from off-dry Rosés, White Zinfandels, and light bistro styled wines, to big, rich powerful wines - even luscious wines for dessert bottling. The flavors range from plummy to raspberry, although deep blackberry fruit and brambly spice tones are most common.

Winemakers Notes

Perfectly aged and drinking well right now; this rich and complex Zinfandel is like a plum compote with a hint of raspberry, and cinnamon, cloves and black pepper spices. The palate is full, soft and round, showing supple tannins that reflect it's superbly aged character. The raspberry fruit lingers on the finish with various spicy components and well integrated oak flavors.

Winemaker Jerold O’Brien admits he’s a sucker for Zin, always has been. Trouble is, he can’t grow it at his lofty Santa Cruz Mountains vineyard, which overlooks the often fog-infused Monterey Bay. So, he sources fruit from the Mohr-Fry Ranch in Lodi, one of the first to be certified as sustainable. The grapes from these 60 year old vines, planted in deep sandy soil, come from one of the coolest growing areas in the Central Valley. I do two things whenever I see Zin and Lodi on the same label: I flinch and then I immediately look at the alcohol content. Whew. It’s under 16%! Whoopee! I might actually read more...

Classic Lodi Zin with pure raspberry fruit aromas with hints of peppery spice. Full, soft and round...a pleasure to drink.
