The Eguren family, generation after generation since 1870, have been dedicated to grape growing and to the elaboration and ageing of great wines in one of the most prestigious estates in Rioja. Sierra Cantabria has made its wine under this brand since 1957, from its 90 hectares of vineyards. It has an average age of 35 years and is situated in a unique location, between the River Ebro and the Sierra Cantabria mountain range. This mountain range has given the name to the winery and protects the vineyard from the cold winds from the north, creating a specific microclimate for the cultivation of the vines and therefore providing a differentiated personality to our wines. This is smoky and nutty on the nose with aromas of medicinal herbs, dried meat and jerky. There are strong notes of coffee bean and some floral top notes from oak. On entry, this is rich and smooth with fine acids though it turns a bit matte in the mouth. There’s nice fruit here along with nice cut. Sweetness of wood appears on the mid-palate, accenting the nice, wild plum fruitiness of the wine. The finish is a bit dry, woody and spicy, with a hint of Mexican chocolate. Ultimately, this is very good but it is in a dense and chunky style. 90pts

Vivid ruby. High-pitched aromas of wild strawberry, raspberry and spicecake are complemented by a subtle smoky nuance. Zesty, precise sweet red berry flavors display very good depth and focus. Picks up a note of allspice with air and finishes with... Stephen Tanzers IWC. A Tempranillo wine from Rioja in Spain. 2008 Sierra Cantabria, Bodegas Rioja Reserva Unica 750ml

Roasted rubbery savory aromas include lesser notes of graphite licorice toast and berrry fruit. The wine feels plump round and full for a 2008 with grabby tannins and oaky spicy flavors of toasted berry. It s lasting and savory on the finish with leftover oak. Drink now through 2018. -M.S.
