Sierra Cantabria Rioja Reserva Unica' 2007

Sweet leather and vanilla notes greet the nose followed by soil tones, hints of smoldering herbs and fine dried raspberry fruit with a hint of wild mushroom. This is broad and just a touch soft on entry but the acidity kicks in to add a lovely brightness here and serve as the tent pole that supports the fairly transparent, earthy and lightly herbal red berry fruit. The tannins are very nicely polished in the mouth yet offer fairly firm support right through the long, clear and lightly spicy cherry and cranberry finish. This is really refreshing and bright in the mouth. A pretty classic example of its type and a lovely food wine. 91pts

The Eguren family, generation after generation since 1870, have been dedicated to grape growing and to the elaboration and ageing of great wines in one of the most prestigious estates in Rioja. Sierra Cantabria has made its wine under this brand since 1957, from its 90 hectares of vineyards. It has an average age of 35 years and is situated in a unique location, between the River Ebro and the Sierra Cantabria mountain range. This mountain range has given the name to the winery and protects the vineyard from the cold winds from the north, creating a specific microclimate for the cultivation of the vines and therefore providing a differentiated personality to our wines. Deep ruby. Fresh raspberry and floral scents with suave Asian spice and cola qualities adding complexity. Energetic red fruit flavors show excellent balance and sweetness picking up floral pastille and mineral nuances with air. Finishes clean and precise nicely framed by smooth harmonious tannins. In a distinctly elegant style especially for the vintage. Stephen Tanzers IWC.

The 2009 Reserva Unica (an unfiltered blend of 97% Tempranillo and 3% Graciano) offers up aromas and flavors of lead pencil shavings cedarwood new saddle leather vanillin black currants and blackberries.
