What to Expect

Australia has certainly made Syrah its own, even bestowing it with a new name: Shiraz. In the warm, dry climate of Australia this noble grape, responsible for some of the grandest wines of France, produces an intense, unique expression that is distinctly Australian. The ripe grapes take on classic notes of black pepper and leather that add depth and complexity to the black cherry and plum fruits on the palate. Australian Shiraz has typically been aged in American Oak barrels which impart the wine with a distinct note of vanilla that can add to the impression of ripeness many of these wines have, but the time in barrel also allows the wines a chance to settle and reveal their rich, voluptuously styled mouthfeel.

Winemakers Notes

The wine was 100% barrel fermented and aged for 14 months in 95% American oak and 5% French oak. 75% of the oak was new and 25% was one year old. This wine is deep maroon with perfumed aromas of dark chocolate and blackberry. There are also some hints of coffee and golden syrup. The palate is an intense explosion of sweet, luscious fruit and toasty oak, even so the texture is silky smooth and creamy and seems to glide over the tongue. Well balanced, the wine finishes with cinnamon and licorice that linger for some time. It is drinking well now and will cellar for many years.

Reviews

The sensational 2004 Shiraz's inky/purple color is followed by aromas of graphite, blueberries, and creme de cassis. It offers wonderful purity, plenty of stuffing, toasty espresso notes from new oak barrels, admirable intensity, and a tremendous finish... -Wine Advocate

Popcorn nose. Very bizarre. Juicy, strong acid, big body, feels strange on tongue. Beery! Kind of a porter/stout, but not as bitter. Raisin. Chocolate. Jammy. Huge. Smoky.
