I think this is a fine rose if you're into well structured, soft and yet at times restrained bouquet, dry with hints of dark berries, watermelon and a little earth. Nothing too crazy but also not too memorable.

At Shinn Estate Vineyards, growing a great wine is accomplished through gathering many diverse elements and combining them in harmony - Our vineyard practices are based on an ever-increasing diversity of plant material and beneficial insects. Our cover crop between vine rows contains as many as 25 species, while the vine plantings consist of numerous selections within each variety. We harvest and ferment our selections separately, blending them into a finished wine only after many blending trials. In the cellar, we use several French coopers for the barrels, and oak from several forests, all of which impart their individual aging characteristics to the Wine - From the vineyard floor to the bottle, our wines are the result of the diverse ecosystem we have created on the estate, coupled with meticulous winemaking and gentle aging in the cellar. A medium pink, it’s medium bodied and offers briar, strawberry, watermelon and a faintly buttery note on both the nose and the palate. Dry, but fruity, and with a little noticeable skin tannin this is a rose to enjoy with a wide range of foods. Think barbeque chicken, think grilled salmon, think burgers.

I respect any winery that thinks enough of rosé to make rosé for rosé's sake — rather than as an afterthought. This time of year especially, I’m glad for wineries that put their all into these versatile, food-friendly wines. Rosé comes in many shapes, sizes and weights. Some taste more like white wines with a little coloring. Shinn Estate Vineyards' 2007 Rosé ($15), on the other hand, is the opposite end of the spectrum. It’s a pale red wine really. It's unique both for how it's made and the way that it shows actual varietal character. Many rosés are either the result of blending or of bleeding juice off juice to intensify red wines, but Shinn grows a specific clone of Merlot specifically for the production of this wine each year. A medium pink, it’s medium bodied and offers briar, strawberry, watermelon and a faintly buttery note on both the nose and the palate. Dry, but fruity, and with a little noticeable skin tannin, this is a rosé to enjoy with a wide range of foods. Think barbeque chicken, think grilled salmon, think burgers. Heck, I tasted it with a barely rare steak over the weekend and it worked surprisingly well. Make sure that you don't over-chill this one. It's better just barely chilled.

"There is no reason to produce wimpy little pink wines with no varietal character." That's what David Page, co-owner of Shinn Estate, said when I asked him about his 2006 Rosé.And, boy, is it different from most every other Long Island rosé I've tasted this summer. It's a much richer, bolder wine. Furthermore, rosé isn't an afterthought at Shinn. They have a particular lot, of a particular clone of Merlot, that they devote to their rosé every year.Page is right, this strawberry and watermelon-scented wine is far from wimpy. It's medium bodied and much rounder and fuller on the palate - but still balanced with gentle acidity and even a little tannic structure. There is a faint buttery note too, although malolactic fermentation was strictly avoided. For me, it's almost too bold, but it's still plenty fresh, refreshing and versatile. Page, a professional chef, recommends it with "everything from lobster rolls on the beach to charred steaks in the backyard." Sounds like the perfect wine for a North Fork summer.
