Shinn Estate Vineyards Merlot North Fork Estate 2009

Member Review by Nicki Gig:

red berry, sour cherry with a tinge of rose petals on the nose, a little earthy, somewhat musty and cedar-like, a lean wine in flavor. The cheese paired with this particular wine actually allowed more of the flavor components of the wine to come to life. The cheese was Major Farm Vermont Shepherd, sheep's cheese, slightly salty with herbal hints as well.

At Shinn Estate Vineyards, growing a great wine is accomplished through gathering many diverse elements and combining them in harmony - Our vineyard practices are based on an ever-increasing diversity of plant material and beneficial insects. Our cover crop between vine rows contains as many as 25 species, while the vine plantings consist of numerous selections within each variety. We harvest and ferment our selections separately, blending them into a finished wine only after many blending trials. In the cellar, we use several French coopers for the barrels, and oak from several forests, all of which impart their individual aging characteristics to the Wine - From the vineyard floor to the bottle, our wines are the result of the diverse ecosystem we have created on the estate, coupled with meticulous winemaking and gentle aging in the cellar. It's a ripe, but surprisingly understated and agile red with blackberry, raspberry and plum on an expressive nose that is filled out with herbs, mocha, earth and vanilla.Similar flavors come through on the palate, with the addition of a minerally note on a medium-long finish. Medium-grip, but well-incorporated tannins provide nice structure and will give this wine some longevity, maybe 5-7 years.Today, it benefits greatly from an hour or two open, breathing.

Medium ruby red in the glass, the nose is youthful with fresh red cherries, plums and toasty oak aromas. On the palate, similar red fruit character is accented by subtle nutmeg and clove, and gently gripping tannins.
