Sherwin Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain District 2002

Member Review by 97mjr:

[Girl and the Fig, short ribs] Deep dark cherry color. On the nose, cassis, dark cherry, smoke. On the palate, cherry, smoke, cassis; later developed caramel. Huge tannins, tempered only some what by the beef. Great structure. Though it was fun to drink, it should be shelved for a minimum of 1-3 years. Should easily last for another 15 years. Had the opportunity to visit Steve Sherwin on the previous day. The best stop of the trip. Steve was extremely welcoming. He toured has through his property, which is stunning. And he walked us through his process--in fact he even broke out the punch down. After trying the 2002 and doing some barrel tasting, we walked away with a case. A great way to spend a day.

We are pleased to announce the release of our 2005 Sherwin Family Vineyards Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, our 10th vintage of Estate Cabernet. It’s hard to believe that so much time has passed. It seems like just yesterday that we were clearing the land, planting the vineyard, and dreaming of what has now become Sherwin Family Vineyards. As always, the 2005 vintage is made entirely from fruit from our 16-acre vineyard at the top of Spring Mountain. Comprised of 80 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 12 percent Merlot, and 8 percent Cabernet Franc, the wine was aged for 20 months in new French oak and then aged another six months in bottle prior to release. This wine shows the lush fruit and intensity of our mountaintop growing conditions, with hints of mocha and well-integrated tannins. 1,270 cases were produced. If you haven’t visited us recently, on your visit you will notice that Steve has been one busy guy. The outdoor fireplace and expanded patio at the winery are complete and our newest addition - the Bocce court - is ready for action. We have added a secure shopping cart to our website, and we are now able to take orders for our Estate Cabernet Sauvignon online. The next time you are planning a trip to Napa Valley, we hope you will visit us at our winery for some old-fashioned Spring Mountain hospitality. We are still open by appointment only, so give us a call, and we’ll get a date on the books. We hope to see you soon! Read less

[Steak] Opened the last bottle about a year ago. Decanted for 1 hr, drank over 2h. This time seemed even more extracted to the point of being syrupy. Cherry on the palate and huge tannins otherwise lacked depth. Decanted over night and so much more better: carmel, herbs, red fruit. If you are going to drink now plan in advance for some serious decanting. Will likely reassess in another 6 mos.

Ultraripe, with a touch of sweetness to the red currant, black cherry and wild berry fruit and the alcohol stands out a bit. The texture is smooth and the tannins are ripe and integrated, finishing with a burst of ripe fruit... Wine Spectator. A Cabernet Sauvignon wine from California in USA. 2002 Sherwin Family Cabernet Sauvignon 3000ml
