Sheldrake Point Riesling Finger Lakes 2010

Winemaker's Notes:

Sheldrake Point’s 2010 Riesling is an estate wine produced entirely from Riesling grapes grown and hand harvested from our 43 acre vineyard located on the west shore of Cayuga Lake. It is a blend of Riesling from two vineyard blocks: 85% R1 block, and 15% R2 block which were harvested on October 15 and 20, 2010. The wine was fermented cool, blended in March 2011, and bottled in July 2011.

11.5% ABV. 3% residual sugar, 9.7% total acidity, (specs from winery). This wine was consumed earlier this year, at the same time as the Indian Wells (WA). Nose of apple and lemon, with a little character of late harvest Riesling. Flavors of sour apple, honey and corn syrup, but withoiut the extraction of a late harvest wine. A little sharp finish. Much darker (golden) than Indian Wells. This is wonderful if you like the strong sour apple flavor, which I do.

Light lemon color leads to an inviting nose redolent of honey, peaches and spiced pears. Round, full and rich in the mouth from the wonderful noble rot, this Riesling remains fresh through a finish of honeyed tree fruit. A wonderful 'auslese' in a Finger Lakes style. - Winery

Rating: 90/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the September 2010 issue. 11.5% residual sugar. Between its obvious development and its relatively high alcohol, this wine reminded us more of the first attempts at late harvest Riesling here in California than did any of the other wines. And like the best of those wines, it is intense, keenly focused on dried apricot character with honey and even a quite useful note of sharpness at the margins. It is complex and rewarding. 375 ml bottling.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Unlikely to improve with further aging.

Rating: 94/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the September 2010 issue. 14.5% residual sugar. Smelling as much of botrytized influences as anything else, this highly concentrated effort combines notes of honey, burnt orange, roasted almonds, dried apricots and an edge of piquancy in its wholly impressive aromas, and it repeats that bounty in the mouth as well. It needs nothing more than a slice of almond pound cake to show magnificently now and for the next few years. 375 ml bottling.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Unlikely to improve with further aging.

Rating: 83/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the September 2010 issue. Here is a fairly sweet Riesling whose ample acids are arguably a bit more than needed, and both the wine's hard turn to green-pineapple stiffness and its nagging suggestions of earth lessen its potentially juicy appeals.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Unlikely to improve with further aging.
