At opening, deep, rich fruit, mostly plum, with earthy, grassy tones, and some motor fuel on the nose. Stays tight until 3 hours after uncorking, then opens up wonderfully at four hours and exhibits sweet and sour medley of red and dark fruit notes, including red cherry, strawberry and plum, with appearances of cinnamon, pepper, cream, earth, and even pencil lead. On the palate, this wine starts tight, acidic, and bland, but opens over time to balanced complexity, with wide array of tastes, supported by increasingly pleasant acidity and silky tannins, both of which support long, chewy interplay of fruity and herbal tastes, including plum, pomegranate, red cherry, wild cherry, cranberry, thyme, pepper, and earth. In time, prune and plum flavors intertwine with apples and cream. Long-lasting peppery finish adds spicy conclusion. Well worth the patience.

Weingut: ShaferLand: USARegion: KalifornienRebsorten: 75% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet FrancInhalt: 0,75 lAlkoholgehalt: 15 Vol.%Säuregehalt: 6,1 g/lRestsüße: trockenEmpfohlene Serviertemperatur: 16 - 18°CFassreife: in Barriques gereift (20 Monate)Lagerfähigkeit: 7 - 10 Jahre ab JahrgangAuszeichnungen des Shafer Merlot:88 Parker PunkteJg. 2006 - 90 Punkte Steven Tanzer Intern. ($48) Very good deep ruby-red color. Medicinal black cherry, licorice and flowers on the slightly high-toned nose, along with a suggestion of cherry skin. Dense, sweet and fruity in the mouth if still a bit youthfully tight, with a slight medicinal q... Stephen Tanzer's IWC. A Merlot wine from California in USA. 2006 Shafer Vineyards Merlot 375ml

Winemaker's Notes:

This release is marked by its perfumy aromas of dark fruit that push out of the glass. The wine itself fills the mouth with opulent flavors of red and black berry fruit, licorice, spice, pepper, strawberry and plum. It's a wine that pairs so well with food, it makes me hungry justtasting it." Elias Fernandezwinery notes: "Thanks to heavy winter rain, the season started with a lot of moisture in the soil. After some heatin June and July, temperatures cooled giving the fruit an unusually long, dry hangtime, helping todevelop tremendous color and flavor."This is a California Wine
