Shafer One Point Five Ts 2006
From a modest beginning of 1,000 cases in 1978, the winery has grown steadily until reaching its present size of 32,000 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Sangiovese and Syrah. Today Shafer wines are available in major markets nationwide and in many foreign markets.
Red fruit, spice, cassis, very ripe, creamy aromas. Flavors are slightly tart, very smooth, lilting, morphing, well oaked, bright on the attack but mellowing out as it's held in the mouth. Wonderful smooth tannins, but oh so closed right now. Lay it right down.
Barnyard and chocolate prevalent in nose at opening. Dry, sharp palate, but interesting and elegant – stays hot and astringent through finish. After one hour, still hot and spicy on nose and palate. Hot and bitter finish continues through two hours. Fruit stays small during first two hours, and barnyard flavors remain strong. After three hours, fruit blossoms and the wine broadens into a more elegant experience, though it remains acerbic on the finish. At four hours, this strong Cab is absolutely at its peak of elegance and size, with the emergence of cherry and other bright red fruits filling an earlier vacuum.
First: Brett. Beyond the flaw the wine is soft and elegant. Textured tannins. Chocolate balances the barnyard.
Big bold and showy style of rough and ready cabernet. Dense black currant with some camphor and tar. Some slight vanilla notes. Big chewy but sophisticated tannins with a nice balance throughout. I like the turn these have made with the re-branding of One Point Five. 91/100
