Shafer Napa Valley Merlot 2005

Member Review by gdp:

A fine blend of maraschino cherry and chocolate on the nose is quickly joined by an earthy, sweaty, dirty tone on the nose then some red shale and both the alcohol and acidity are obvious on the nose, too bad. Sweet fruit attack, assertive, poorly integrated acid through the midpalate, short finish. This is what mass produced California wine is, not sure of the price or production number but this is good table wine with mass appeal but not for me. 86pts.

At first sight, it is dark and rich. The scent was nothing noteworthy, almost smelled bad. But the taste, oh yes. It tasted of chocolate and berries. It lingers on your tongue long enough for the earthiness of the wine to come through. Paired it with steak, lobster and grilled asparagus and it never lost its way. It enhanced the flavors of the food and the food enhanced the flavor of the wine. This is not a mass produced wine, not by a long shot.

We really enjoyed this 2005 Shafer- just about as much as the 2003 vintage. A great wine.

I have one of these in the cellar. Any comments on its longevity or suggestions for its optimal opening date would be appreciated. Ive had it for a few years now and am getting itchy with anticipation.

The 2004 Merlot is rich purple, reflecting the vintage, and offers lush, focused flavors and aromas of bright cherries, strawberry, red and black plums, and cranberry. The Cabernet Sauvignon gives the wine added strength, firm tannins and

A blend of 75% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Cabernet Franc, the lighter-styled, elegant 2004 Merlot reveals notes of berry fruit, herbs, coffee beans, and chocolate.

(includes 8% cabernet sauvignon and 6% cabernet franc) Good ruby-red. Spicy red fruits and cocoa powder on the nose. Supple and silky on the palate, with fresh, nicely delineated flavors of redcurrant, flowers, spices and tobacco. Very nicely balance... Stephen Tanzer's IWC.
