A fine blend of maraschino cherry and chocolate on the nose is quickly joined by an earthy, sweaty, dirty tone on the nose then some red shale and both the alcohol and acidity are obvious on the nose, too bad. Sweet fruit attack, assertive, poorly integrated acid through the midpalate, short finish. This is what mass produced California wine is, not sure of the price or production number but this is good table wine with mass appeal but not for me. 86pts.

- Blend: 86% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc This Merlot comes with big scoops of red and black fruit aromas and flavors, fresh plums, sweet black cherries, currants, red licorice, a little pepper, and pleasing doses of fragrant earth, smoke, and minerality. Crisp acidity as well as an elegant bouquet of berry fruit, menthol, sweet cherries, and spice. The tremendous aromatics are followed by abundant fruit. The 2005 should drink well for a decade. - (includes 8% cabernet sauvignon and 6% cabernet franc) Good ruby-red. Spicy red fruits and cocoa powder on the nose. Supple and silky on the palate, with fresh, nicely delineated flavors of redcurrant, flowers, spices and tobacco. Very nicely balanced wine, finishing with rather suave tannins and some lingering oakiness.

- "The 2005 Merlot, which has 12% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Cabernet Franc in the blend, is a sensual, elegant style of wine. Soft, richly fruity, with notes of herb, mocha, coffee bean, and plenty of berry fruit, the wine has crisp acidity and a good finish. Drink it over the next 7-8 years..." WA 12/07

- A blend of 75% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Cabernet Franc, the lighter-styled, elegant 2004 Merlot reveals notes of berry fruit, herbs, coffee beans, and chocolate.

We really enjoyed this 2005 Shafer- just about as much as the 2003 vintage.
A great wine.

- Notes on the Duckhorn Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 : NVWE NOTES: 2005 is an unusually elegant vintage for this Duckhorn bottling, stressing focus and harmony, rather than the almost heady ripeness of most previous versions. The aromas are a chiseled mix of red currant, red cherry, red licorice, vanilla and baking-spice scents, with hints of bouillon and forest earth well in the background. The wine is certainly rich, although the mouth-feel is racy and polished, and the lingering flavors are a moderately tannic mix of red currant, red licorice, rich vanilla, earth and baking-spices. read more...Expect this fine Cabernet to get better for another three to five years, but feel free to enjoy it now.WINEMAKER NOTES: A classic Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, this elegantly balanced wine combines generous fruit-forward structure with age-worthy tannins and a long, satisfying finish. From its layered aromatics to its lush palate of flavors, this wine brings together an array of red and black fruit elements, including red currant, baked plum, blackberry and sweet black cherry. Adding further depth to this core of ripe fruit are notes of vanilla, molasses, allspice, fresh herbs and black olive.DUCKHORN NAPA VALLEY CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2005

Smells like chocolate and tastes like sweet, dark chocolate. Very smooth. Even had a hint of tobacco. Very clean finish, very easy to drink.
