What to Expect

Merlot has gotten a bad rap as of late but there is no denying the wine's appeal. Packed with deep, dark berry fruit and nuanced hints of cocoa, herb and earth with a soft structure. Its velvety texture makes Merlot instantly appealing and an obvious alternative to similar, more tannic Bordeaux varieties.

Editorial Reviews

A fine blend of maraschino cherry and chocolate on the nose is quickly joined by an earthy, sweaty, dirty tone on the nose then some red shale and both the alcohol and acidity are obvious on the nose, too bad. Sweet fruit attack, assertive, poorly integrated acid through the midpalate, short finish. This is what mass produced California wine is, not sure of the price or production number but this is good table wine with mass appeal but not for me.

We really enjoyed this 2005 Shafer- just about as much as the 2003 vintage.
A great wine.

Rating: 89-91 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 132, May/June 2007 (includes 8% cabernet sauvignon and 6% cabernet franc) Good ruby-red. Spicy red fruits and cocoa powder on the nose. Supple and silky on the palate, with fresh, nicely delineated flavors of redcurrant, flowers, spices and tobacco. Very nicely balanced wine, finishing with rather suave tannins and some lingering oakiness.

Smells like chocolate and tastes like sweet, dark chocolate. Very smooth. Even had a hint of tobacco. Very clean finish, very easy to drink.
