From a modest beginning of 1,000 cases in 1978, the winery has grown steadily until reaching its present size of 32,000 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Sangiovese and Syrah. Today Shafer wines are available in major markets nationwide and in many foreign markets.

Rating: 90/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the October 2010 issue. Very often a wine that the "ABC-Anything But Chardonnay" crowd would find too big, too ripe, too rich, too over the top for their sensitive palates, this year's edition seems to have found favor with several denizens of that caucus. In our quiet way, we would point out that the wine still registers 14.8% in alcohol, and what those folks are finding out is that fruit and balance have a way of trumping dogma. We like the bright, solid character of the appley, ever so slightly tropical tones that show up in both nose and mouth, and we find the creamy and slightly toasty oak overlay to be well fit to the fruit. This wine relies on its manners, not on its bluster.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Further bottle aging can improve this wine.

The 70 acre Red Shoulder Ranch was purchased by Doug Shafer back in 1988. Carefully selected, small-cluster Chardonnay clones were planted and since the first vintage in 1994 this wine has been a standout among California Chards. It's always barrel fermented using only wild yeasts. 2009 was a standout, perhaps one of the best ever. It scored 96 points, by Wine Enthusiast Magazine who said "Shafer consistently produces one of the biggest, fruitiest Chardonnays in California, yet the wine remains balanced and interesting....gigantic in pineapples, pears, mangoes, tangerines and honey, and yet so minerally and crisp that somehow it finishes dry."
