Rather subtle yet complex on the nose with layers of herbs, medicinal spices flecked with dollops of oak spice and vanilla all over a base of firm fresh black currant fruit. The fine balance here makes this feel a bit smaller and more open that it proves to be. There's plenty to like here with layers of currant and cherry fruit topped with savory herb notes, a sprinkle of mint and some coffee candy notes that lead to the firm, long, and fairly obviously tannic finish. The tannins prove to be less long-lived than the minty, wild cherry and currant fruit of the finale. This is long, layered and powerful. Let it rest for another year or two and then enjoy it over the following ten. 92pts
This is Bordeaux like with crystallized blackberry and currant fruits joined by notes of blond tobacco, turmeric, gun powder and green peppercorns. This is big and rich, broad across the palate yet with nice cut. The flavors lean a bit towards the red fruit end of the spectrum with notes of red apple peels and red currants on the mid-palate that are joined by green spice tones and spicy oak notes that lead to a moderate finish full of black raspberry and jammy black plum. Again the tannins are very well managed and polished. This needs another year or two to fully integrate but should be excellent from 2012-2020 92pts
The wine is a lovely deep purple color in the glass with limited opacity. The nose is a lovely blend of green grass, balsamic, cedar and cocoa powder. The taste is quite lovely, with some subtle fruit up front that's enveloped with some complex flavors of anise, lavender and minerality. The finish is long, smooth and with a velvety mouthfeel that just lasts for a minute or more. The wine is a deep ruby color in the glass, as you would expect from such a blend. The nose presents some lovely black cherry and plum, along with some cinnamon and floral notes. There is also a sweetness in the nose, almost candy-like, which is offset by the aroma of licorice and just a hint of cedar. The taste is a true delight, with a lovely balance of ripe berry and plum at the outset, giving way to fresh herbs and a certain earthy quality. The flavors are very sophisticated in the way they play off each other and bring real balance to the overall taste of the wine. The tannins are still a bit tight for this younger wine, but they work well for a long, smooth finish. Light nose is still a little hot with a hint of an herbaceous character with some clay. Flavors are of blackberry, medium tannin and acidity. I would hope for some more balance between the acidity and the fruit, but it's a good wine, clean and refreshing. Light chocolate finish.
A little bit sharp with the acids, but there are some really interesting fruit and herbal notes just under the surface, with great tobacco and chocolate notes. I get basil, rosemary, and apple on the mouth.
Sharp cherry nose. Complex but nondescript in the mouth with medium body and bright cherry fruit.
