Seven Hills Cabernet Sauvignon Walla Walla Valley Seven Hills Vineyard Reserve 2010

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

From vines at fire Ridge and the old blocks of Seven Hills Vineyard. Just the 9th time this has been produced since 19888 Slightly candied dark fruit greets the nose followed by cherries in alcohol, hints of cocoa, mineral, and sandy, and strong herbal and graphite accents. On the palate there’s an early blast of hard oak, all vanilla and chocolate driven before this shows off its tight red fruit. Tense and refined in the mouth this comes off as almost gentle with a fine backbone, but the dusty tannins build on the palate. This has a bit of a Bordeaux feel to it, firm and restrained, and not nearly as opulent or obvious as the previous wines. Everything is in place here, this only needs some time and when mature my score might seem to be too conservative but I can only guess where this is going. 91pts

The wine is a deep, inky purple in the glass with bright ruby along the edges. The nose tells me immediately I'm in for a treat, with aromas of rich leather, blueberries, plum and spice notes. The taste is intense, with a burst of ripe black fruit, plum, blackberries and black currant that gracefully transitions to some dark chocolate and licorice notes midpalate. The finish is just outstanding, as the structure of the tannins are so well ingrained with the fruit that you end up with a powerful finish that lasts seemingly forever, or at least until you take another sip, which you can't help but oblige!
