Sequoia Grove Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 1994

Member Review by chock:

Cracked open this '94 Cab in October 2009 over a steak dinner. Flavorful, bright, well balanced and food friendly. 12.5% alcohol. This evening turned out to be as much a history lesson in Napa cabs as a tasty wine and dinner. I wish Napa still made wines like this rather than the big alcohol laden-koolaid that's coming from most CA winemakers. We've been drinking this '94 cab for a number of years (well, since '94). It might be a little bit past it's peak but is still a very good drinker. Some notes: Nose: I absolutely love the nose on this as I do most good old wines: a little bit dusty, leathery, mature fruit. Color: Still a good, rich red cab color. No browning. Although the color may be a little thin on the pour and around the edges. Taste: The taste brings a little less than the nose. It's a little light. There's not a lot happening on the back of the mouth. Most of the flavor happens in the front and center of the mouth, but what you get in the mouth is immediate, full and refreshing. There's still a good amount of acid. The tannins have subsided to a manageable level and there's a mouthful of dried fruit in the taste. It worked great with our dinner. At this point it's almost more European in style than Napa cab.

Sequoia Grove Vineyards:
There’s most definitely something special about life in the Grove. Is it the towering Sequoia trees that define the estate and inspired the name? Is it the atmosphere of unassuming sophistication? Is it our unique combination of award-winning wines (led by our signature Cabernet) created with an artisan spirit? It’s all of the above—and more. And it’s right here, waiting to be discovered.
Suggested Recipe Pairing presented by
Coconut Rice Sweet Potato Cheesecake

RiceSelect's creamy Arborio gets blended with sweet potato, coconut milk and vanilla to create this decadent cheesecake. Pairs well with Saunternes; a white dessert wine that has hints of coconut from aging in oak barrels.
