Sequoia Grove Cabernet Sauvignon Napa 2015

External Review by We Speak Wine:

Tasting Note: Deep ruby in color with intense aromas and flavors of blackberry, red and black cherries and currants interwoven with sweet spice, floral and mineral notes. The palate has a big, round, silky arc with smooth tannins, impeccable balance, and a long, flavorful finish. Food Pairing: A versatile food wine, the Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon pairs well with any red meat on the grill, pork tenderloin, heavy cheeses and grilled vegetables. Points of Distinction: * A concentrated, silky wine emphasizing varietal expression, richness and balance from start to finish * Rutherford-dominated blend of Cabernet Sauvignon complemented by Bordeaux grape varieties * Aged for 20 months in oak barrels for added complexity

Notes: Dark red in color, this wine has notes of blackberry and mocha with hints of plum and sage. On the palate, the impeccably balanced wine is dark, fleshy and supple, with notes of espresso and bittersweet chocolate and a touch of black cherry on the finish. HARVEST & WINEMAKING The grapes used to produce this wine are from the best appellations in Napa Valley from the best growers. A list of our growers include: Sequoia Grove Estate vineyard, Tonella Estate vineyard, Stagecoach, Morisoli, Lamoreaux, Henry Brothers, Healy and Christian vineyard. Each site was harvested at its ideal brix, ranging between 24.9 and 29.4, and picked over the course of four weeks, from September 13th through October 18th. The fruit was hand sorted before undergoing a 1-2 day cold soak. The lots were individually fermented in small batches, with gentle pumpovers 2-3 times per day. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation in barrel, where it was aged for 20 months before being racked and bottled in August 2015.

Tasting Notes: Dark red in color, on the nose the wine smells of blackberry, black cherry, and clove, with background notes of coffee and vanilla. On the palate, the wine bursts with fresh fruit, cherries, and blackberries. A seamless arc of flavor flows into a slightly smoky finish. Harvest Notes: The 2012 vintage was a winemaker’s dream. A textbook winter with a decent amount of rain, led into a dry spring with a dash of rain around bud break followed by a moderately warm summer and a dry fall. Tonnage was up in all vineyards and varieties, pushing harvest later into the fall and the quality was amazing. The excitement for the wonderful aromas and flavors coming from 2012 wines is truly palpable. AGING: Aged 20 months in barrel, 40% American oak PH: 3.79 ACIDITY: 5.71 g/L ABV: 14.2%

Tasting Note:Dark red/black in color, the nose gives an immediate aroma of raspberries and warm baking spices, leading into cassis and clove. The palate has elements of pie crust, with smooth, silky tannins and well balanced acidity. Harvest Note:There is no mincing words about the 2011 vintage. It was a challenging vintage for Napa Valley, BUT it was no different than a typical Bordeaux vintage. A late and wet spring crawled into a cool summer. The long awaited heat played chicken with the rain coming in October. This is the vintage when it pays to know your producer, another way to put it: only when the tide goes out do you see who is swimming naked. Sequoia Grove is very lucky to work with some amazing growers who did what it took to get fabulous quality in 2011. Sequoia Grove welcomes the challenging vintages; they prove the value of the winemaker.Food Pairing:Versatile with food, this wine pairs well with grilled red meats and vegetables, pork tenderloin and heavy cheeses. - WineryGRAPES: 81% Cabernet Sauvignon9% Cab. Nicely oaky, with complex flavors to match, featuring black licorice, mocha, dark berry, dill and cedar notes, ending with a savory aftertaste. Drink now through 2022. 23,875 cases made. -JL Composed of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and small dollops of Syrah, Petit Verdot and Malbec, the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon is a completely different animal than the Cabernet Franc. It exhibits lots of juicy black fruits intermixed with graphite, licorice and floral notes. The color is a healthy dark ruby/purple, and the wine is medium to full-bodied and nicely concentrated with moderate but soft tannins in the finish. This wine should drink well for 15-20 years. - Robert Parker 88+ Points
