What to Expect

Though Mourvèdre is a grape with Spanish roots, where it is known as Monastrell, it is most closely associated with the South of France and the Bandol appelation in particular, where the grape produces rich, powerful wines that retain rustic tannins partnered with dark, wild berry flavors and gamy, leathery nuances. It is also commonly called Mataro in California.

Reviews

Sweet treacly nose of molasses and raisins. Very port like with thick, rich mouth feel and a lot of sugar. Good acidity balances the sweetness and the wine finishes on a slight burnt rubber, chemical flavor which is not unpleasant. Decant before serving.

The sweet 2003 Bellum El Remate is an Amarone-styled offering produced from late harvested Monastrell. It possesses a dense ruby/purple color, a fig and raisin-like character in its perfume of blackberries, chocolate, and scorched earth, moderate sweetness, and wonderful purity as well as intensity. Drink it over the next 3-4 years. This estate is one of the top discoveries of all my tastings. -Wine Advocate

Very sweet and hot, strong aromas of rum, but not too alcoholic to enjoy, with notes of fruit, wood, and lavender.

Quite hot nose with molasses and brown sugar. Sweet wine, with black fruit flavors, good tannic structure, toffee and tar and leather on the finish.
