The Conti Faina family have always been closely connected to Umbria. Although the first written evidence of their presence in the region dates back to the 17th Century, it was the figure of the Count Zeffirino Faina (1826 – 1917) who wrote the first important chapter in the family’s history in the territory. Zeffirino was many things – an entrepreneur, a researcher, an innovator, a politician and a patriot. One of the founders of the University of Perugia, he introduced some revolutionary innovations to local agriculture. He was particularly passionate about wine: and was the first man to bring to Umbria the concept of specialized viticulture, due to research he had carried out in France and to his knowledge of the Tuscan model, which he learned from his friendship with the Baron Bettino Ricasoli. The wines of Collelungo thus became well known and sought after not only in Umbria but in Lombardy, the Veneto, Emilia Romagna and Latium. This story lives again today thanks to the project carried forward by the late Sebastiano and today is carried forward by Alessandro Faina, together with Sebastiano’s daughter Angelica Faina: that of re-introducing their wine to the world.
