Sella & Mosca Terre Rare Riserva Carignano del Sulcis 2012

External Review:

#1 Best Buy of the Year in Wine Enthusiast Magazine!! Over 20,000 wines were sampled and this wine topped them all for overall value! Sella & Mosca winery has 1200 acres of vines on the Island of Sardinia. In this rugged Mediterranean setting the old Carignane vines are pruned close to ground to protect them from the strong winds off the sea. The sandy soil drain well and the roots go deep. Many of the vines are ungrafted pre-phylloxera. This Riserva is 100% Carignane and the grapes are all hand picked. Fermentatyion is strictly modern in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks for up to 15 days. After that the wine aged for 12 months in American oak barrels before extended bottle age allowing the wine to soften and the flavors to expand. A seriously good wine and a tremendous value, Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored this 92 points and said "This elegantly structured wine opens with aromas of black plum, mocha, Mediterranean herbs and a hint of scorched earth. The round, enveloping palate doles out ripe black cherry, blackberry, cinnamon and white pepper, while firm, silky tannins provide the framework. A fantastic wine, it’s already enjoyable and will offer fine drinking over the next few years."
