Sella & Mosca 'Riserva' Cannonau di Sardegna 2014

Member Review by cortina74:

This wine surprised me beyond my expectations at this price. It has a classic Italian lightness to it similar to a quality Valpolicella or other semi-acidic wine from the Veneto region. Yet this grape is native to Sardegna alone

Had this with lunch the other day at Tronino's @ Home. Not a bad bottle, spicy and unripe berry, but with rounded mouth. Took a long time to open up a bit. Might do well with a bit more age?

Very earthy, rustic, beautiful color and bouquet. Surprisingly not tannic and no after effects, i.e. headaches. Becoming one of my favorites.

11/08/08 Black cherry & spice flavors. Quicker finish, fairly dry. We enjoyed this wine very much. A great buy.

Nose of dark fruit and a little heat. Tasted light and has a little tang to it. Finished like a glass of really ripe, dry, authentic apple cider. The kind you have to shake up to distribute the sediment. I like that about it. Light body very light color. Simple but good.

/ The 2003 Cannonau Riserva is dark ruby in color with savory aromas of red and black fruit, gamey smoked meat, herbs and olives. It has a lush mouth feel with savory fruit, oak and spice, and dry tannins on the finish. A terrific wine for the price.

Over the Barrel/ Drink 2005-2015. Cannonau is the Italian name for Grenache. Very dark color with purple hues. Violets, roasted game and jam to the nose. Well balanced with plummy fruit and cherries in the mouth. The texture is silky with a lot of finesse and length.

Cannonau de Sardegna Riserva 2008 - 89 points, Wine Review Online/ Cannonau (a.k.a. Grenache) has been grown on Sardinia for millennia. Indeed, the Sardinians insist their island, and not France or Spain, is the origin of that grape. Whatever the origin, Sella & Mosca’s 2008 Reserva is a lovely example. Pleasantly rustic, it combines red fruit notes with earthy and spicy elements. Mild tannins lend support without being intrusive. It’s a good value wine for robust fare from the grill during the waning days of summer or to match with a hearty pasta dish.

The New Italy/ The Sardinian variety Cannonau produces velvety reds like this black cherry-filled bottling from one of Sardinia's largest producers.

/ The 2002 Connonau Riserva is light ruby in color with an orange rim and displays scents of cranberry, spice earth and leather. On the palate it exhibits sweet blackcurrant fruit, anise and more earth and leather accents, combined with finely wrought tannins, and a soft juicy finish. This is a wine for food and early consumption.

Cannonau di Sardegna 2008 - 91 points, Wine Advocate/ A frankly ridiculous value...gorgeous. Firm tannins frame a core of expressive red cherries, tobacco, wild herbs and flowers. The 2008 impresses for its depth and sheer richness. It is a magnificent wine.
